In Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer, players experience an all-out adrenaline rush as they drop down huge wave faces, pull into barreling tube rides and pull off hundreds of massive trick combinations and signature pro moves. Players choose their own path as they interact with famous surfers, sponsors, magazines and photographers. Exotic real world locations and events including full beach environments with real landmarks and hazards lend authenticity to the game. Multiple modes of play let gamers choose from Career Mode, Free Surf and multiplayer games and each mode unlocks new riders, boards, events, videos and secret breaks. Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer features ultra-realistic ocean conditions including barrels and tubes, and is the only surfing game to have populated waves, where gamers can ride alongside other surfers. Players can also use the Record Book feature to track individual rider stats and world records set throughout the game.

Extreme sports fanatics are no doubt familiar with another boarder published by Activision, the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. Now the six time World Champion, Kelly Slater is lending his name to a high-quality surfing game that is more than just Tony Hawk on water.

There are nine pro surfers to choose from:

Surfing is truly a global sport, and Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer offers 14 exotic locales to show your stuff. Hot spots include the U.S., Europe, Africa, Australia, and the South Pacific. The weather, waves, landmarks and hazards will vary from one place to another. Wherever you roam, you'll have to watch out for rival surfers and wannabees.

Gnarly Tricks

A detailed tutorial introduces the game's intuitive controls. You'll be amped just to grab a nice line on a quality wave, but the key to racking up huge scores is linking complex tricks.

If you can reel off a series of Face Tricks and Aerials, you will fill up the Boost Meter. You can then perform your surfer's signature moves and link together several moves for a huge combo bonus. You may wipe out quite a bit at first, but once you get a feel for the waves, you'll coast on a feeling that is both thrilling and serene.

Another Day at the Office

The Career Mode borrows from the Tony Hawk model by giving you a variety of challenges. Most require you to earn a high score to impress sponsors, but more unusual challenges will keep you busier than an ice-cream vendor on a hot day at Diamond Head. You will be required to perform specific tricks, jump over piers, splash sailboarders and much more. There are also competitions in which your performance is rated on a scale of one to ten. A good performance in Career Mode will unlock new beaches, boards and special tricks. You can even pump up your rider's stats. If you're just into foolin' around, a Free Surf mode allows you to hang ten on any unlocked beach. The Multiplayer Mode lets you carve a wave with a buddy.

Swell Graphics

It's no surprise that Kelly Slater is exclusive to the system that fuels the jaw-dropping water effects of Wave Race: Blue Storm and Super Mario Sunshine. In Kelly Slater, the GCN more than amply ships the aquatic goods. The water is almost a tenth character in this game, rising, swirling, roaring and absolutely gorgeous when it catches the sunlight just so. A complex 3D engine ensures that no two waves are ever quite alike.

The size and speed of each wave varies as you travel the world. Waves curl around you realistically, creating a delirious sense of speed. When you shoot a tube, the camera pulls in close to highlight the action while the ocean swirls all around.

The sky changes according to the weather. Menacing clouds threaten the horizon and colorful sunsets paint the sky. The character models look great in their swimsuits, but the real stars are the awesome aquatic environments.

Where's Dick Dale When You Need Him?

Lots of details have been included in Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer that recreate the surfing lifestyle. Your riders can wear fully licensed gear from sponsors like Roxy, Quiksilver, and Billabong. The music features artists like Ben Harper, Perry Farrell, and Pearl Jam, and there is also tons of exclusive footage from Kelly Slater's Surf Trip program which was televised on ESPN.

Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer manages to bring the sport of professional surfing to life on the Nintendo GameCube. Even if you don't know a Method Grab from a Tail Chuck, this game is worth a look due to the sweet graphics and addictive game play.

Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer has been rated "E" (Everyone) by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
