Star Wars has made the jump from movie to video game in countless incarnations and spin-offs. While most of these games focus on the climactic space battles, few have allowed players to man the helm of the equally important ground troops. Enter LucasArts' Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the Nintendo GameCube.

Episode II (and a Half)

Taking place shortly after Star Wars: Episode II, The Clone Wars explores the confrontation between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Each mission follows the chronological line of events leading to Star Wars: Episode III.

You command three of the greatest Jedi Knights of the Old Republic: Mace Windu, Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. The title of Jedi Knight comes after years of discipline. Apparently, it also comes with the license to pilot any vehicle with laser blasters.

While your trusty lightsaber comes into play during head-to-head confrontations, most of the combat occurs behind the wheel of a sci-fi vehicle of destruction. Players can grab the helms of hover tanks, speeders, assault walkers and gun ships. Unique control schemes for each vehicle keep combat missions fresh.

Combat? Adventure? A Jedi Does Crave These Things

It's only when you hop out of that tank that you feel a sense of vulnerability. Armed only with your lightsaber and Jedi skills, you'll have to cut a swath through seemingly endless opposition.

Not only will your lightsaber slice droids like a hot knife through butter, you can also use your powers of the Force to hurl your lightsaber like a boomerang. The ability to run around and chop up robots is a nice touch, but you can't help but feel grateful when you hop back into the cockpit of a mean machine.

Mission objectives typically vary from destroy this to protect that. An easy to use radar system and wingman commands ensure total control over each scenario. Enemies are automatically targeted and a healthy supply of laser fire and missiles are always on hand.

We're Not On Tatooine Anymore

While The Clone Wars isn't directly based on any of the movies, many of the locations will feel familiar enough to fans. Your battles will take you across six familiar Star Wars planets. Terrains vary from rocky desert to thick forests.

Star Wars: Car Combat

Even after the single-player campaign is completed, a feature-rich multiplayer mode guarantees extended gameplay. Paying homage to the car-combat games from previous console generations, the extensive multiplayer mode could practically stand as its own game.

Players can engage in team play, deathmatch, king-of-the-hill and co-op endurance modes. If you saw a vehicle in Episode II, there's a pretty good chance you can control it in multiplayer. Allowing for up to four players, The Clone Wars should definitely make an appearance at your next Star Wars convention.

Sights and Sounds

The Clone Wars makes good use of the added processing power of the Nintendo GameCube by featuring tremendous draw distances and particle effects. Combat areas are often filled to the brim with vehicles, both friendly and hostile.

Complementing the on-screen action is the ever-present Star Wars soundtrack. Presented in Dolby Pro Logic II, every laser blast, explosion and voice clip will tantalize your aural senses.

Something For Everyone

Successfully mixing vehicle combat and hack-n-slash gameplay, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is one war worth fighting for.
