Hordes of Orcs.

Through the magic of cinema, a whole new generation of Middle-earthlings have experienced the adventures of elves, dwarves, wizards and hobbits in J.R.R. Tolkien's classic Lord of the Rings series. Electronic Arts invites players to join the adventure in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for the Nintendo GameCube.

Straight To Video Game

EA has taken a decidedly direct approach to translating Peter Jackson's films to video-game form. Players command some of the greatest heroes in the Fellowship through 12-plus levels of hacking, slashing and arrow-slinging. Fan favorites Aragorn the Ranger, Gimli the Dwarf warrior and Legolas the Elven archer are at your command. Each character has unique moves and strengths, so you can pick the one that feels right for you.

As it has with Harry Potter and James Bond games, EA shows its willingness to go the extra mile to assure the most cinematic experience. Levels are introduced by actual footage from the New Line Cinema films and the on-screen actors are replaced by their polygonal look-alikes. Movie stars Elijah Wood (Frodo), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Orlando Bloom (Legolas) lend their voice talents to all-new dialogue. The effect truly immerses players into the world of the movie.

The Two Movies

While named The Two Towers, your quest actually begins with battle sequences from the original Fellowship of the Ring. Players do battle against familiar foes such as Wraiths, Orcs, Trolls and Goblins. After slaying army after army of attacking foot soldiers, you'll often encounter a horrific boss character at level's end.

A deceptively short list of combat commands at adventure's start offers a surprising amount of depth as your journey progresses. Weak and strong attacks can be chained together for combos. Each hero can also block attacks and unleash projectile weapons on hard-to-reach enemies. As you proceed, you will learn new skills, providing added depth to the game.

In many scenarios, a computer-controlled comrade will help you through a level, but there is no two-player co-op mode.

Character Building

While sharing little with the countless role-playing games that Tolkien's writings have spawned, The Two Towers does allow for limited character building. Players are rated on their performance during gameplay and points are tallied at the end of each level. Not only will your character gain levels (and thus, strength) but you can use earned points to unlock devastating new techniques.

Audio/Video Magic

The development team did an ace job of bringing the spectacular movie scenery to life. You'll often find yourself marveling at the cascading waterfalls and beautiful architecture. The environments bristle with lovingly crafted animations and detailed textures.

Each character is well animated and textured to look just like the actors from the movie. There's a noticeable difference between Legolas's nimble gait and stocky Gimli's trot.

Nobody will complain about the soundtrack either, which has been directly taken from the two movies. The fully orchestrated music, coupled with voices from the movie's stars, adds to the intensity of each scene and makes you feel as though you're really there.

Insert Tolkien To Continue

Electronic Arts has exceeded expectations with a highly entertaining action title. Only the addition of more levels and a two-player mode could make this one any better. As it stands, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is one movie-to-video game to rule them all!
