Meet the Racoon City Welcome Wagon...

Capcom is unleashing an all-new survival horror treat on the Nintendo GameCube in which the challenge is to stay alive in the face of unspeakable horror. This prequel to the Resident Evil series raises the bar for the genre with improved graphics and mind-bending puzzles.

The Origins of Evil

Resident Evil Zero takes place in 1998, before the events of the first Resident Evil game. During the cinematic opening sequence, the S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team's helicopter is forced to crash-land outside Raccoon City. When the team splits up to investigate, rookie cop Rebecca Chambers seeks shelter from the rain in a dilapidated train. It seems that all the passengers are dead until she comes face to face with an escaped convict named Billy Coen.

When the mangled bodies filling the train start to come to life, an unlikely duo is formed. Rebecca and Billy may not have much in common, but they know they must work together to survive. The two must disembark from the train and explore new locations. Eventually you will learn the secrets of the Raccoon City saga.

Two Heads Are Better Than One

Teamwork is the key to survival. You will need to use each character's strengths while minimizing weaknesses. Rebecca can combine items and is a chemical expert, but she is weak defensively. Billy is a Marine veteran who is skilled in combat and can move large objects, but he cannot combine items.

You can swap between the two characters with the press of a button. Many times, you must use both of them to solve a puzzle. Billy and Rebecca can pick up and swap items. When they share a screen, each has unique controls. You control the secondary character's movements with the C-Stick and command him or her to fight or wait.

Billy and Rebecca's unusual relationship adds a compelling human element to the zombie-hunting. Their dialogue adds drama. Neither can survive without the other, so when one is off screen you will be genuinely concerned for his or her safety.

Graphics and Sound

An eerie feeling permeates the entire game, thanks to incredibly detailed graphics and sound. The train is a visual banquet that is both disgusting and beautiful. You will notice tables set with fine china, living quarters with curtains drawn and zombies slumped in their seats. Each new enemy seems more gruesome than the last.

Lighting is as expertly used here as in a top-drawer horror film. Candles give off a soft glow and floodlights pierce the darkness. Objects cast realistic shadows that bend and wave as lights flicker.

Capcom ably deploys vivid weather effects. The rain beats down on glass and leaves puddles inside broken windows. The wind blows curtains wildly and lightning flashes reveal shadowy figures.

Hair-raising sound effects enhance the eerie atmospherics and provide audible clues. Even the sound of your own footsteps will add to the tension. The brooding music rises and falls with the action.

This Zero's a Ten

Resident Evil Zero is a must-have for survival horror fans. The terrifying atmosphere will keep you riveted to your Controller and the cooperative puzzles will stretch your mind. Excellent graphics and balanced gameplay may even win over a few stubborn critics of the survival horror genre.

Saving your progress requires a Memory Card (not included) with at least nine free blocks.
