MAJOR VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE RACES TO N64® Ridge Racer® 64 Offers Exclusive Four-Player Mode And New Features

REDMOND, Wash., February 14, 1999 - Nintendo® 64 is about to break the speed limit with the arrival of Ridge Racer 64. The next installment in this major racing franchise comes exclusively to N64 with new modes, features and outstanding visuals. This new version of Ridge Racer is the first game in the series to feature an exciting four-player mode. Ridge Racer 64 is developed by Nintendo Software Technology Corp. (NST) and will be available February 14 for a suggested retail price of $59.95.

Ridge Racer 64 includes all of the tracks from previous Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution games along with four new exclusive courses designed specifically for N64. Players can choose from 25 high-speed vehicles, with additional cars available throughout the game. All of the Ridge Racer 64 cars have different attributes and abilities, including radically different speeds and handling, allowing players to select the best possible vehicle for the course. Graphically enhanced to take advantage of the N64's power, Ridge Racer 64 features realistic environments and special effects never before seen in a Ridge Racer game. Players will be treated to stunning visuals such as smoking tires and working headlights on the cars.

In addition to the game's four-player mode, Ridge Racer 64 also allows players to race head-to-head or even select a three-player split screen mode. Full analog controller support makes for precise control and steering, not available for the Ridge Racer games. Further game enhancements include all new collision modes and the ability for novice players to learn the famous Ridge Racer "drift", allowing cars to powerslide through hairpin turns in true arcade racing fashion.

Ridge Racer 64 was licensed from Namco of Japan and developed by Nintendo Software Technology Corporation of Redmond, Washington, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo Co. Ltd. The NST team draws its talent from several sources, including the established gaming industry and from the DigiPen Institute of Technology, an accredited university which specializes in video game production. Ridge Racer 64 represents NST's first game production for the Nintendo 64 platform.

The hit franchise never looked better, especially in four-player mode.

RR64 sends more than 20 different chariots scampering over eight wide-open tracks, including all tracks from the original Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, plus three N64 exclusives.
The brand-new four-player mode looks especially nice, with a high frame rate, no loss of detail and zero fog.

In single-player mode, a bright palette, polygon-rich car models and a fast 30-frames-per-second rate delivers a potent racing experience that will pin back the ears of even hard-core speed fiends. Subtle graphical touches includes lens flares, streaks from tail lights, smoking tires and working headlights. RR64 is blissfully free of 2-D scenery, known derisively among developers as "billboards."

The basic RR physics are here in full force. Cars loudly bang off guard rails and each other like so many ping-pong balls, while those that drift from the invisible race line spin wildly out of control. Managing the drift in each of RR64's four speed classes is one of your biggest challenges.

Like most arcade racers, RR64 gives you a choice of automatic or manual transmissions. Ridge Racer 64 is the first game developed by Nintendo Software Technology Corporation, Nintendo's in-house development team in Redmond, Washington.
