LucasArts and The Collective bring a new kind of tomb raider to PS2

Did you know that Lara Croft started life as a man? 'Scandal!' we hear you scream! Well, there's no need for all that - we only mean that the original design for the now mega-famous Tomb Raider was that of a man, and was based on Harrison Ford's most adventurous role, Indiana Jones. Needless to say, the digital sex-change seemed to have the desired effect - Lara became hugely popular and remains so today, while Indy has, until now, only been able to bask in the reflected glory of days gone by on the silver screen. But all that has changed now, thanks to Jones' re-appearance in his latest adventure, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, which obviously, you can play on PlayStation 2.

As ever, Indiana jet-sets around the globe in his attempts to accumulate the three scattered pieces of the Dragon Seal, the key needed to unlock the crypt of China's first emperor, also home to the Heart of the Dragon, a black pearl with the power to mould minds, which he has to locate before an evil underground coalition find it and are left to their own fiendish devices (and... breathe). It's some plot, and is reminiscent of some of Lara's own adventures. Similarly, The Emperor's Tomb is an action game played from a third-person perspective, and you get the chance to go on an expedition into the wild and wonderful environs of a 15th century Czech castle, a Chinese mountaintop fortress and an intriguing underwater palace in Istanbul. These exotic locations are beautifully rendered, thanks to the Collective's proprietary 3D engine. The game is set some 70 years ago and is comprised on ten huge levels, in which you can engage in hand-to-hand combat, sharp-shoot with your pistol or whip out your... whip. Furthermore, improvised weapons such as shovels, chairs and table-legs can be used should you find yourself short on ammo. The game boasts a (predictably) cinematic feel too, with action sequences staged on moving gondolas and rickshaws.

If you were a fan of the Tomb Raider series, then there's a fair chance you may enjoy Indiana Jones and the emperor's Tomb. Similarly, if you were an Indy fanatic when it came to the movies, then this is definitely worth a look. In short, it's a narrative-driven melange of combat and puzzle-solving. So there.

  • Test out ten hefty levels set in a range of international locations
  • Third-person action adventure incorporating combat, exploration and puzzle-solving
  • Control the original all action archaeologist in an all new adventure

In his boldest adventure yet, Indy returns to face an old nemesis, the evil Nazis, who he must once again outwit and out-race in an epic, globe spanning quest for the mysterious "Heart of the Dragon." • Adventure plays out in dramatic fashion with new gameplay features such as brawling combat.
  • Indy can engage in fierce hand-to-hand combat or use his trademark whip and pistol against foes that are trained in the martial arts.
