The limbless one makes his long-awaited twist. For the two people out there who have never heard of him, Rayman is one of the most recognisable game characters around. He's featured in two adventures (and a few spin-off titles) on numerous game formats and is rested and ready for his third major outing.

In Hoodlum Havoc the Lums, small light beings that are the power source of Rayman's universe, are becoming tainted by an evil influence, transforming into Dark Lums. Their new purpose is to taint the Heart of the World, the centre of all existence. Rayman, being the hero he is, must avert this catastrophe causing this new Hoodlum Army to put a bounty on his head. With his bloated mate, Globox, in tow Rayman will find defeating the Hoodlum Generals only the first part of an even bigger story. Old friends return to offer assistance, new foes form alliances to create bigger troubles for Rayman, and Globox develops a drinking problem and a bizarre split personality!

More in line with his first adventure, Rayman is back to relying on good old-fashioned face-smashing to fend off the enemies. Rather than having to collect items to further the game there is now a heavier emphasis on combat. The enemy AI is one of the numerous strengths of the game. Hoodlums can be very hard to get a lock on - they evade, hide, retaliate and pursue.

Different enemies may even team up so that a sniper Hoodlum can keep you at a distance while a sorcerer Hoodlum builds up a powerful attack. This is where Rayman's new powers come into play. The power-ups take the form of chunky hi-tech gauntlets that snap onto Rayman's hand., allowing him to lock on to enemies, smash down walls and take out the Hoodlums from great distances.

Graphically, Ubi Soft France have outdone themselves with some of the most amazing landscapes and locations seen in a game. Each level has its own wildlife and atmosphere so you'll keep spotting bizarre creatures roaming around each level. Rayman himself has a new streamlined look with a hooded shirt, elastic shoes and giant eyes that makes him look like he's just been out clubbing.

When a game of this genre hits PC it usually has to work a little harder than console versions to get the attention of savvy PC gamers. With so much to see and do in this game, Rayman 3 looks like it hits the mark and gives gamers a lot more than your average 3D adventure.
