For the last 15 years the corrupt dictator, Sopot, has oppressed the people of the Commonwealth. Take up arms against corrupt government powers in this futuristic, first-person shooter that gives you the freedom to destroy your surroundings using an explosive arsenal of weapons.

In the Red

You are a member of Red Faction, a group of rogue super-soldiers who were sentenced to death by the evil leader, Sopot. This six-man squad is the Commonwealth's only hope to overthrow Sopot and his army of unholy creations.

Each member of Red Faction has their own special talents. You play an important role as the demolition specialist. Using your gift for exploding things you will help the team infiltrate enemy strongholds, destroy key installments, and cause havoc for Sopot's minions.

As you progress through each mission, you will witness cut-scenes that keep the plot moving. The scripted events help bring unexpected twists to what began as a routine mission.

Geo-Mod Engine

Like many first-person shooters you will access an arsenal of machine guns, shotguns, and grenades. Many of the 14 weapons have a secondary function such as the grenade launcher on the N.I.C.W. machine gun and the burst function of CSP-19 Semi-Automatic Pistol. A few vehicles are thrown in for good measure including a tank, submarine, and the supremely satisfying Battle Armor.

What sets Red Faction II apart is the much-touted Geo-Mod engine. Developers, Volition, have created a world where huge explosions actually have an impact on the environment. This means that with enough firepower you can create your own doors, collapse towers, and demolish just about anything in the game.

Sometimes the game gives you cues when you need to blaze a trail. Other times you may accidentally discover a secret passageway with a stray rocket. Of course, there are still boundaries in the game, but the Geo-Mod engine affords you a new level of freedom.

Multiplayer

Up to four players can compete in various split-screen modes including Death Match, Arena, and Capture the Flag. There is also a Bagman mode that challenges you to hold a bag as long as possible. Team versions of each mode allow you to split up into groups or team up against computer opponents.

Saving a Profile to your Nintendo GameCube Memory Card keeps detailed stats including Kills, Shots, and Accuracy.

Graphics and Sound

The characters are quite detailed making it easy to pick out individual members of your squad. Enemy animations are quick and smooth, but they tend to look somewhat stiff. Explosions are impressive and piles of rubble are left behind in the place of walls.

You will see a mix of in-game and pre-rendered cut-scenes. The character voices are good and dialog often carries over into the missions. Propaganda for Sopot's regime is spread throughout the environments and adds to the oppressive atmosphere.

Red Faction II is a solid first-person shooter. With the added freedom of the Geo-Mod engine the fun outweighs any frustration and the above-average plot really draws you into its futuristic world.
