The quintessential real-time strategy game, Command & Conquer is credited with creating an entire game genre. Westwood Studios has fully redesigned the game for Nintendo 64 with 3-D units, buildings and terrain. Play as either the lawful Global Defense Initiative (GDI) determined to uphold freedom, or the evil Brotherhood of Nod (NOD) bent on total world domination. Construct bases, command armies and develop new technologies in the battle to control the Earth. All of the original missions from the PC version are included, along with exclusive ones created specifically for N64.
"The Command & Conquer franchise has fascinated PC gamers for years," says Peter Main, Nintendo's executive vice president, sales and marketing. "This updated version with new missions and astounding 3-D graphics is set to bring the same excitement to the N64." Both the Global Defense Initiative and the Brotherhood of Nod have their own unique characteristics and style of play. Each side has its own set of buildings, units and tactics. Throughout the game, players must seek out and mine the precious mineral known as Tiberium, which provides both sides with the power they need to keep their forces operational.
There are a variety of mission types in Command & Conquer. Some require an all out assault on the opposition, while others demand careful planning and strategy as only a single unit is available. Players must also deal with changing terrain and the ever present "fog of war" which prevents them from viewing portions of the battlefield they have not yet explored. Superior sound-compression technology allows gamers to hear mission briefings and transmissions from units in the field of battle. A communications officer keeps players up to speed on their mission status, including sneak attacks by the enemy and the location of potential targets. Command & Conquer also features a pulsating techno soundtrack that underscores the on-screen action, while support for the N64 Expansion Pak allows for enhanced graphics.
