Dual Heroes

After numerous delays and strenuous re-polishing, Electro Brain has finally unveiled Dual Heroes, its first tournament fighter for the N64.

Set in a distant future where Earth is ruled under the iron fist of emperor Zoor, a group of brave (or foolish) fighters don futuristic Gaiathyst suits and attempt to liberate the planet. The plot is nothing new, but let's face it: we play fighting games for the action, not the storyline. If the characters look vaguely familiar, that's because they were designed by the same artist responsible for creating the Power Rangers. With the exception of the feline fighter Juie, all of the combatants are humans decked out in Japanese action hero costumes. There are eight different brawlers to choose from, and all of them are similarly attired in sleek futuristic fashions.

The fighting philosophy in Dual Heroes is focused more on punching and kicking combos than special attacks. Since you're not able to hurl huge balls of fire at your opponent, you'll need to take a more subtle approach to the tournament. The block button plays an important role in preventing strikes and setting up counter attacks, and successful fighters will have to master the art of special throw moves. The button combinations are a breeze to learn in Practice Mode, but you'll need to alter your fighting style depending on the strengths and weaknesses of each character.

If you can't stop your opponent from smashing your head, you can crystallize your fighter and transform into that character's double identity (hence, "Dual" Heroes). The fighter undergoes a transformation similar to Mario's metamorphosis when he wears the Metal Cap. With a rock solid body made out of metal, your attacks become much more effective.

A unique aspect of Dual Heroes that you won't find in any other fighting games is VS-VR Mode. In case you don't have any friends brave enough to play you in a two player match, you can enter the virtual arcade and challenge one of 9 different Dual Heroes masters. Each virtual gamer has a favorite Hero, and their fighting style is much different than the CPU's normal artificial intelligence. This mode of play will challenge players who have learned to anticipate the computer's attacks.

Dual Heroes offers players a solid fighting system and interesting character design, but experienced fans of tournament fighters may feel restricted by the game's limited variety of fighting arenas and selectable characters. True fighters, though, simply wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing that emperor Zoor is out there oppressing poor Earthlings with no one to stop him.
