Best-selling basketball series showcases new EA SPORTS Freestyle Control

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – October 7, 2002 – Get off the bench and onto the court with EA SPORTS’ NBA LIVE 2003, released today by Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox’ video game system from Microsoft and the Nintendo GameCube’. The game was originally slated to ship in late October. The ninth installment of the best-selling basketball franchise, NBA LIVE 2003 allows players to get into the action and live their dreams of NBA superstardom.

NBA LIVE 2003 features the revolutionary EA SPORTS Freestyle Control, letting players express their game through the use of the right analog. With the Freestyle Control, players can execute over 100 true-to-life moves such as the crossover dribble, step-back move, Triple-threat moves and pass interceptions, giving them total player control and making them feel like they are truly part of the action.

Gamers will also have the chance to compete in head-to-head online play with NBA LIVE 2003 for the PlayStation 2. Featuring an on-line lobby, gamers can meet, greet and chat with other gamers around the country and will be able to download current rosters throughout the NBA season. In NBA LIVE 2003, the new Quick Play feature gives gamers the ability to make offensive and defensive set adjustments with one press of a button. Whether it’s an isolation or pick and roll on offense or man-to-man or zone coverage on defense, gamers now have control of what their teammates do on the court. Players can also use the new Take Charge button in order to draw the offensive foul.

Gameplay enhancements made to NBA LIVE 2003 include over 30 new rebounding animations that make for better looking, more responsive and more accurate rebounding. A new shot blocking mechanism also allows players greater responsiveness and quickness to shots creating a greater chance of blocks. With a wider variety of shot blocking animations, players can find themselves blocking a ball off the backboard or rejecting a ball into the stands.

The atmosphere of the NBA comes to life with new crowd animations, enhanced lighting for players and arenas, all 29 NBA coaches on the sidelines, as well as dramatic camera coverage of in-game and out of play sequences. Players can also relive the glory days of their favorite teams by choosing from a selection of Hardwood Classics’ jerseys for all 29 teams.

NBA LIVE 2003 will also feature EA SPORTS TRAX, showcasing exclusive songs from some of today’s hottest hip-hop artists including Flipmode Squad featuring Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg and Fabolous. Included with every copy of NBA LIVE 2003 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox will be a CD soundtrack containing seven songs featured in the game. NBA LIVE 2003 is rated “E” (Everyone) by the ESRB. Publisher Electronic Arts touts its fresh new control scheme as a "right-hand revolution," and in fact, using your right thumb for snazzy dribbles and defensive moves is intuitive and fun. When driving to the hoop, you can cross over left or right. You can also post up to take advantage of your big man in the key.

Defense is a snap too. Just press Left or Right on the C-Stick to swat at the ball or press Up to block a shot.

NBA Live 2003 puts all the pro players and pro moves at your fingertips. Basketball fans can cruise up and down authentic NBA arenas while coaches gesture from courtside. Updated rosters for the 2003 season reflect all the off-season roster moves. The commentary has also been spruced up to include over 5,000 lines of fresh banter.

Game Modes

The Exhibition Game mode will satisfy your need to start a quick game. Up to four players can compete using any NBA teams. Playoffs mode lets you set up an eight-team tournament ladder using both human and CPU-controlled opponents.

For a more in-depth simulation, a single player can start a Season with any team. You can choose to build your own team using Fantasy Draft. Seasons are Short, Medium, or Long. Franchise mode lets you guide your team through several seasons.

For the ultimate test of raw b-ball ability, you can face off any two NBA players in 1 on 1 mode. The new freestyle control method makes this mode the perfect opportunity to showcase your play-control talents. Test your moves in Practice mode before showing up your friends.

You can play commissioner, altering the rules to OK goaltending or stays longer than three seconds in the key. Foul sensitivity can also be tweaked to suit your taste.

Graphics

All the high-flying slams and lightning-fast dribbles are animated nicely in NBA Live 2003. Players drive past defenders in one fluid movement. Defenders reject shots with authority. Lighting effects are also impressive, with realistic shadows and reflections.

Vintage jerseys have been included so you can give your team a historic look. However, the player models could use more detail.

NBA Live 2003 is a fun basketball game with an innovative control scheme. The freestyle controls give you new freedom without compromising the rules of the game. The Franchise mode might disappoint b-ball geeks, but a great 1 on 1 mode and multiplayer support will make NBA Live 2003 a hit.
