Back of Case

A lowly thief shall lord it over noblemen.

Since the introduction of Magic the Gathering, collectible trading-card games have captured the imaginations of gamers worldwide. Activision and developer From Software have tapped into that competitive spirit with their highly addictive action/RPG Lost Kingdoms II.

Taking place 200 years after the events of the original Lost Kingdoms, the once-peaceful land of Argwyll faces imminent destruction. As the gifted heroine Tara, you must harness the power of your Runestone and save the kingdom from annihilation.

Pick A Card

Unlike traditional trading-card games, all the action in Lost Kingdoms II occurs in real-time. During your adventure, you must collect special cards that can be used to summon powerful creatures to fight for you in battle. Lost Kingdoms II has twice as many Guardian Creature cards as the first game -- more than 200 in all.

Lost Kingdoms II replaces the random-battle encounter system from the first game with a free-flowing action-battle system. Players can see enemies ahead and choose to avoid or battle them.

Enemies come in six elemental types: Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, Machine and Neutral. With the exception of Neutral, each element has its own strengths and weaknesses in relation to the others. Each card is equipped with its own element.

Before entering a level, you can assemble a deck of as many as 30 cards. Make sure to check the element types prevalent in any given level before making your final selections. If you use up all of your cards during a level, you must abort and try again from the beginning.

Card Types

Different cards carry out different functions. Basic card types are divided into Independent, Summons, Weapon, Trap, Spin and Transform.

Independent : These cards call forth creatures that behave independently of you. They will attack any nearby enemies until they run out of energy.

Weapon: These cards allow your character to launch a melee attack. Each card usually allows for two to three attacks before expiring.

Summons: Similar to the Weapon type, these cards summon creatures that typically execute powerful attack spells. More defensive-oriented creatures will stay near the player, attacking any enemy that approaches. Other creatures will cast support spells such as heal or restore.

Spin: These creatures continuously circle Tara, acting as a shield, until they run out of energy.

Trap: These creatures set traps in the location they are summoned from. Approaching enemies will set off the trap.

Transform: New to Lost Kingdoms II, the Transform card temporarily morphs Tara into a new creature that allows her to reach areas which cannot be accessed by mere humans.

Battle System

To call upon a card, players must have the required number of Magic Stones, which are left behind by slain foes. If you wish to summon a card and do not have the stones to do so, your health will be drained instead.

At any given time, Tara can use as many as four cards in battle. After a card is used up, the next card randomly selected from your deck takes its place. If you don't need to use a card in your hand, you can place it at the bottom of your deck and pick another card.

Between Battles

After completing a level, Tara can visit shops to sell and purchase new cards. Cards gain experience by defeating enemies. Once your cards have accumulated enough experience, you can take them to a card shop for an upgrade. Upgrades are usually more powerful versions of the same card.

Multiplayer

The addictive head-to-head mode from the original Lost Kingdoms has returned. Two players can create customized decks from cards collected in story mode and duke it out for card-battling supremacy.

Bottom Line

The developers have addressed many of the complaints about the first Lost Kingdom's blah graphics and repetitive characters and have added polish to the presentation. RPG fans and trading-card game aficionados should definitely try their hand at Lost Kingdoms II.
