Hip-Hop to It

This coming-of-age tale shoves an adolescent Frogger before the web-footed elder council. To prove his hopping proficiency, Frogger must pass a series of tests that take him across eight worlds. An amphibian with a hankering for adventure, Frogger burrows through lava-filled caverns, snowboards icy mountains and blasts into outer space.

Not much has changed in the world of Frogger. Floating logs are still a viable means for transportation and eating flies still gives you an extra life. Now Frogger can also perform a High Jump by pressing the Y Button and a Super Jump by pressing the A Button. Reaching for high places and exploring every nook and cranny of a level is the only way to uncover the many secrets of Frogger Beyond.

More than 40 different enemies threaten Frogger's slimy skin and further prove that it's not easy being green. A single hit will knock Frogger back to his last checkpoint, so it's important to look before you leap. Fortunately, enemies and obstacles follow simple, easy-to-learn patterns.

To complete his rite of passage, Frogger will need to flip switches, find keys and collect hundreds of coins. Power-ups enable our adolescent amphibian to move faster, eat enemies and will shield him against attacks.

The graphics in Frogger Beyond are vibrant and simple. Cut-scenes have a cheery cartoon style.

Bottom Line

Frogger Beyond keeps the classic arcade frog alive on the Nintendo GameCube. Konami has wisely stuck close to the classic Frogger formula, but a few new ingredients like a snowboarding minigame make this game a worthwhile update.
