Exclusive to the Dreamcast version is a puzzle-fighting mode that allows the player to unlock further bonus features.

Angel character design origins

Angel, one of 2001's newcomers, was the result of a bet between the president of BrezzaSoft and Rage of the Dragons director Ángel Torres. They were challenged to a match of The King of Fighters 98. If BrezzaSoft's players won, then a King of Fighters guest character would appear in Rage; if Torres won, then a character of his design would appear in The King of Fighters 2001. Torres won, and the result was the creation of KOF newcomer Angel.
