Dionakra

Moby ID: 38380

Description

Similar to Arkanoid, Dionakra is a enhanced clone of Breakout. Players take control of a pad at the bottom of the playfield, which is used to direct a bouncing ball towards a number of bricks at the top of the playfield. Once the player has destroyed all the bricks, he gets to advance to the next level. In Dionakra, the bricks represent space crystals that Tony, the galactic dustbin man, has to clean up.

There's different kind of bricks, each kind giving a certain score and requiring a certain amount of hits. Plenty of extras that have either a positive or negative effects exists. There's extras that change the size of the pad or the ball, increases the amount of balls, slows down or speed up the ball, adds a laser gun or makes the ball explosive. The player starts out with a number of lives. When all has been used, it's game over. The game has a total of 50 levels which may be accessed with a password.

Very neatly made!

The Good
What really sets it apart from then-made breakout games, was firstly, the unique, per-level backgrounds, and secondly, the animated power-ups and the ability to have multiple power-ups pop on screen at the same time. The crystals look very realistic, the sounds are as well.

The Bad
Not very challenging, apart from the last 10 levels, the most challenging of which was 49 to me.

The Bottom Line
Very fun, it takes around an hour and a half to complete all 50 levels.

Trivia

Skull power-up

The Skull power-up can actually be hit by the ball, if it is very close to the paddle, and it explodes upon being hit.
