Description official descriptions

The evil Vampire, Lord Drakul had been destroyed and the throne regained in The Crimson Crown. Prince Erik and Princess Sabrina had fled by sailing boat only to be shipwrecked by a giant wave bringing them back ashore. After escaping death, Prince Erik wonders what has become of Princess Sabrina? Alone on a mountaintop, he learns that he is in the land of Slavaria, north of Transylvania... and that another Vampire controls the land.

When tired, sleep in a safe place, or else wake from a horrible dream with two marks on your neck, after three visits you're done for.

This time the challenges are far greater, and so are the number of locations. Bizarre characters and creatures lurk; from town-folk at the local inn who are not as they seem to horrible monsters and cute elks. The player may help others, and they might offer assistance. Explore the Egyptian museum for artifacts or get stuck in the maze to meeting the Queen. The ultimate goal is to destroy the vampire plaguing this land.

a classic game - all adventure gamers should play it!

The Good
The entire Transylvania series of adventure games are true computer game classics! The first entry in the trilogy was my introduction to adventure gaming and this final game was the last Apple 2 game that I played.

The story picks up where the sequel left off. The happy prince and princess are shipwrecked and separated. If that was not bad enough, you landed on a nation ruled by evil. What sort of evil? Well, how about a royal tyrannt and (another) vampire.

The game features improved graphics and sound - pretty cutting edge for the Apple computer in 1990. For example, early on in the game you meet an angry village mob, depicted with impressive graphics and digital voice. The visual and audio effects stand out throughout the game

Expect more locations and puzzles to solve, alongside a bit of humor. The game comes with important papers to help with some of the puzzles.

The game's vocabulary has been greatly improved upon and, you can certainly try a few commands that take the game into the PG-13 range.

The Bad
I cannot think of any serious complaints with this game. It is a pity all three games are not more readily available to modern gamers.

The Bottom Line
Transylvania III is a great adventure game, and illustrates just what the Apple IIGS was capable of. I wish I could play the games on my Kindle or my Xbox 360. Hopefully the entire trilogy will become available for modern gamers soon.

Trivia

Development

Transylvania III was written in ADL, the Adventure Definition Language, created by Ross Cunniff & Tim Brengle in 1987. ADL is an adventure language, semi-object-oriented with LISP-like syntax. A superset of the infamous DDL (Dungeon Definition Language).

Extras

As a bonus, Transylvania III came with a free copy of the original Transylvania.

Penguins

Most Penguin Software (or Polarware) games contain a humorous little remark about Penguins on the back cover of their games. In this case it is "Penguins like playing pans by the pool."
