Superqot
Description
Superqot is a modified version of the original shareware / demo version of the 1996 game Quake. It was released as an April Fool's joke in anticipation of the release of the 2016 title Superhot. The developers modified the shareware game, which was available free of charge, could be modified and redistributed, and can be played entirely standalone, to introduce the game mechanics of Superhot to it.
The original Quake game is still available in full and unchanged, but with a new rendering engine and some scripting to start the action right away. Visually the game is now rendered in tones of white and light blue, while all opponents and weapons are bright red. All textures have also been removed flat to resemble the Superhot minimalist environment. While the game plays the same, but all weapons are available right away, it uses the same gameplay mechanic as Superhot. Time generally only moves when the player's character does so. All action is virtually paused until something is done, such as moving, shooting or hitting. As there are often multiple enemies approaching for different directions, the player has to plan carefully as the flow of time can be controlled, but not be rewound. Unlike the 2016 game one hit is not fatal and it is possible to pick up health.
The game's engine is updated with the DarkPlaces port created by LordHavoc and the Macintosh version is packaged as a Wine application using WineBottler. Just like the Windows version it can be played as a standalone game entirely. The game's source code is provided free of charge upon request.
