NHL 2K9 takes a giant leap forward in gameplay and controls by transferring hockey to the Wii. It may not look or sound the best, but just like the Millennium Falcon, she's got it where it counts. Anyone wanting a fun hockey experience on the Wii, alone or with friends, would be happily served by 2K9.

NHL 2K9 is a solid entry to the franchise that more than makes up for what last year’s lacked. There are a few minor blemishes, but nothing that will prevent you from fully enjoying the deep franchise and must-play Team-Up.

NHL2K9 is a very impressive game, it is very accessible, fun to play and it has a great online mode. I would highly recommend this game to hockey and sports fans alike. I am sure that anyone who buys this game will enjoy the fast paced action that it provides.

It’s sure cool to see the first hockey game on the Wii pass the first test. Of course, NHL 2K9 isn’t a perfect game and isn’t the best looking game but it does capture what we want to see, a playable and fun sport game on a console that definitely needs more than mini-games and Mario games. I haven’t had that much fun on a Wii since the first time I’ve played Wii Sports. Now that 2K has shown to the world what they can do, it’s time to bring the much wanted tweaks. Expectations are high for NHL 2K10.

NHL 2K9 does some good things. The controls have been fixed, it's fun, and there are some nice touches to the presentation. But the AI is very suspect and the emphasis on fun hurts the authenticity, which was once 2K's biggest selling point. Certainly there are merits to purchasing NHL 2K9, but there's no question it is inferior to its rival this year. If you prefer your hockey more streamlined and don't want to be forced to play a slower but truer form of the sport, then this is certainly worth picking up.

Although we prefer NHL 09, NHL 2K9 is a great runner-up, thanks to its mostly enjoyable gameplay, its stacked extras and its rock-solid presentation. For next year, though, Visual Concepts will need to raise its game to beat EA.

If the fun NHL 2K9's developers were trying to bring back lies somewhere around the gameplay of Ice Hockey for the NES (the king of pick-up-and-play sports), they surely missed the mark. But if their brand of fun equals a hockey game that is sort of a simulator, sort of an arcade game, and could be mistaken for a new NHL Hitz, then the developers delivered on their promise.

Not the worst hockey game but definitely not the best. I felt a little skimped when I was playing the franchise mode and felt they were replaced with other lesser modes. The zamboni mini-game was an excellent addition and having at least updated rosters was nice. Enjoyable while in a game, frustrating when navigating the menus and the simplicity of it all.

NHL 2K9 shows that Visual Concepts has pretty much done everything it can to the same core engine that was used when the 360 launched. NHL 2K9 is a good game, but it shows its age in a few too many areas to compete with what else is out there. The crew over at VC is obviously passionate about making its products better each year (which they have done so with NHL 2K9) and about the sport of hockey. But it’s time for the team to start from scratch; to evolve the NHL 2K brand commensurate with the evolution of the actual sport.

The AI is extremely questionable, the graphics are good but not worth writing home about, the player control – while certainly easier – seems too stripped down, and there just aren’t enough sim elements to keep the hardcore hockey fan interested. On the other hand, the sound and accessibility drags us into the experience, there are plenty of simulated aspects that override any thoughts of classifying NHL 2K9 as an arcade-style sports game, and in the end, it all depends on what you’re looking for. Next year, though, we do have a suggestion for 2K: this cross-over 60-40 or 70-30 sim/arcade ratio is tough to pull off; maybe just go 100% in one direction. And for the record, we really don’t have any arcade-based hockey games out there… How’s about Blades of Steel 2?

PlayStation 3Da Gameboyz
NHL 2K9 for the PS3 is a title that like any veteran NHL player knows how to put forth a solid effort. In their endeavor to make some positive changes 2K Sports has put forth a more arcade like experience which in the long run may attract a wider audience, but it has definitely taken away some of what made the game so great in the past, the simulation aspect of playing real hockey. I also have some difficulty looking past the fact that the visuals are in need of an overhaul and the AI needs to be further refined this time around. Regardless, NHL 2K9 is still a fun and enjoyable game.

NHL 2K9 is a good hockey game, it's just not great as we've come to expect. While managing to improve the controls, 2K9's move towards making the game more accessible and 'fun' come at the cost of introducing other issues.

What we have with NHL 2k9 is a top shelf hockey game that still needs some tweaking to perfect the on-ice experience. That said, the impact on the authenticity of the game of having such unparalleled realism in the realm of puck physics cannot be overstated. It’s too bad the off-ice experience, unless it’s patched, is a bit more of a mixed bag because the free agent problem in franchise mode is an absolute killer. Is it a better hockey game than NHL 09? That’ll depend a lot on how you like to play. While both games have their perks, I think EA offers a game that is a bit more fun to play because the controls and the overall feel of that game are just superior enough to make it a more compelling buy. There’s no question, though, that you can’t really go wrong with NHL 2k9, especially if you’re a dedicated fan of the sport.

NHL 2K9 seems to take a step or two backwards in their endeavor to make some changes to the franchise. Outdated player models combined with some pretty cookie cutter run and gun gameplay really hurts their effort. I think the sim orientated gamers will be very disappointed with the more arcade like play. On the flipside though, the more user friendly and accessible style of play should attract more of the casual gamers to the world of virtual hockey that they may have not explored before. In the end NHL 2K9 still offers enjoyment and that is what counts here.

WiiArmchair Empire, The
But as previously mentioned, as much as I like the actual hockey part of the game, even with some occasionally strange-acting AI, the presentation parts of NHL 2K9 suffer because the game went the "realistic" route rather than a cartoony sensibility that just seems to work better on the Wii. The sound effects and the execution of the commentary are poor, which doesn't help the overall presentation. As long as you know what level to put your expectations, there's a decent enough hockey game here. It makes me hopefully for what might come next year.

This series needs to sharpen its skates in numerous areas, because it’s simply a dull game. Skaters’ movements are so floaty that players often drift out of position and defensemen have trouble keeping the puck in the offensive zone. I’m also not a fan of the dekes (even with the new controls), or the franchise mode’s lack of depth. Can’t skate, low skill set, shallow, but can hit? Why isn’t Chris Simon on the cover?

Even then, we don’t think many of you will lose yourself in this rink for months or even weeks. Yes, the graphics are sharply upgraded, the new 12-player online matches are wicked fun, the Franchise mode is deep and detailed, and the silly Zamboni mini-game somehow mesmerized us. But with NHL 09 turning in such an all-star performance, this exercise in nostalgia is enjoyable…but unnecessary.

All of this has us feeling fairly uninspired, yet our love for the series and appreciation for what’s gone into this season’s title means we’ll still skate our way to a Stanley Cup or two before we put 2K9 away for good. That may not be the best endorsement you’ve ever heard, but this sure ain’t the best hockey game we’ve ever played either.

NHL 2K9 for the Wii disappoints in the graphical department as it cannot compete with its competitors in terms of visual appeal. However, the hands-on controls more than make up for this by adding a sense of actually being in the game and not just sitting on the couch playing the game. NHL 2K9 is a great first step for hockey on the Wii, and as it stands now it really is a great party game to engage your friends and family in friendly competition on the ice.

That's not to say I didn't have fun playing the game - I did - but it's as if the sport has gone through a time warp in its conversion to Nintendo's console. I'm not talking from 2K9 to 2K7, but rather sub-2K3, especially on the visual front. In fact, even then the series was never as thrown together or unreliable as it is here. It's still a fast, generally pleasant game of puck, but in no way does NHL 2K9 prove that the company has the passion or follow-through to make a serious impact on Wii. We want to see this game thrive. As it stands right now, it's a big rough, still fun, but a token rookie year as far as sports games go. 2K, it's time to give this one an overhaul for 2K10.

Playing a mess like NHL 2K9, it’s hard to think that just a few years ago this was the hockey game of choice for serious puckheads. Now it would take several pucks to the head to even make me consider paying money for this experience.

Xbox 360The Video Game Critic
In the heat of the action it can be hard to locate the puck, especially with so many meters, names, and icons cluttering up the ice. The collision detection lapses at times, which was evident when I watched a puck pass clear through a goalie's mitt during a slow-motion replay. Despite its flaws, NHL 2K9 still packs enough punch to keep your adrenaline flowing. It delivers more instant gratification than NHL 09, but serious hockey fans may tire of its frenetic, up-and-down pace. Still, between both games, you really can't go wrong.
67
Xbox 360Gaming Nexus
NHL 2K9 is a significant upgrade from the 2K8 offering, but the complete rewrite has some noticeable flaws that demand attention in the 2K10 edition. That said, if those flaws are addressed, this title has a lot of positive things going for it, and can be a serious challenger to EA Sports recent domination of the NHL franchise.
67
Xbox 360Worth Playing
While the gameplay itself might not hold up very well to its competitors, there's still fun to be had with NHL 2K9. However, its mix of arcade and realism — combined with almost no challenge from the AI, unimpressive graphics, mediocre audio, and dated controls — drag down the title. The new features are generally useless, and while the title can be fun and newcomers will probably have a lot of it, NHL 2K9 isn't stagnating; it's just a really big honkin' house.
67
Xbox 3601UP
User preferences are plentiful throughout, and even though there's nothing here that's as innovative as NHL 09's Be A Pro mode, there's no shortage of gameplay alternatives. You can run a franchise, play a season or a quick game, entertain yourself for a few minutes by drafting players and heading to a pond or a minirink, or avail yourself of the tutorials in the game's practice mode.

If you can overlook the disappointing realism and focus on the tight multiplayer, NHL 2K9 may be worth a rental. But even with that said, there are too many issues that hold back NHL 2K9 from being a worthy recommendation when there are so many quality sports titles that released this fall.
61
WiiGamingExcellence
Overall, NHL 2K9 is a respectable first effort with on the Wii. Still, the subtraction of key features from other titles and atrocious graphical presentation hold it back from any sort of rookie-of-the-year consideration. If you’re a hardcore puckhead who only owns a Wii, then this is a fine place to start. Just don’t expect more than a competent game of puck with a unique control scheme.
60
WiiAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
In its maiden effort for the Wii, Visual Concepts plays it safe. It provides what one would expect in a hockey title, but doesn’t really innovate in the feature set. The control scheme shows promise and could be the cornerstone for future installments, provided a way can be found to offer more flexibility for casual fans. Still, it’s commendable that the developer has worked hard to leverage the Wii’s strength when it comes to controls. The biggest complaints I have are reserved for the presentation and multiplayer. Dumbed-down ports for the Wii are getting really old, and in light of the console’s mammoth success, it’s time for its adopters to get some reward for their dollars. The absence of any online multiplayer is just sad. If Visual Concepts can work to build a title from the ground up that employs some of the graphic muscle the hardware provides while including an online mode, this could be a winning franchise.
60
Xbox 360GameSpy
In the end, it's hard to really bash NHL 2K9 other than to say it's a little bit of hockey-lite. NHL 09 offers more realism and gets our nod for overall long-term value. If you're a total rink-monger, get both and enjoy 'em for their differences.

It's hard to categorize NHL 2K9 as anything but a disappointment. Even though it will give you a tough game on the ice, the gameplay isn't very realistic and is monotonously simple-minded in its approach to both offense and defense. I spent time with both hockey games this season, hoping that 2K could at least be considered a decent hockey simulation for those who still haven’t gone over to the EA side. Sadly, 2K can’t even hold its own against older versions of its own franchise, let alone a game as technically sound as NHL 09. What’s more, most of the 2K faithful have since departed, so I’m not even sure if there’s anyone who would give this game a shot in another year or so if they make some improvements. Like I’ve said so many times this year, and I’m sorry to say again, maybe next year 2K.

As the one and only hockey title available for the Wii, NHL 2K9 is a welcome sight; it’s just too bad that it looks so darned ugly. The controls are a breath of fresh air, though, so long as you give them a chance (which we have a feeling too many people won’t). Here’s hoping this is just a foundation for a franchise that will grow into its own and not just be a one-hit wonder.

If it weren’t for the introduction of the Pro Stick, NHL 2K9 would be a rental at best; even with it, the creaky game engine and sub-par visual fidelity make it hard to recommend. At least the price is right, as you’ve spent a lot more money on items you could get a lot less enjoyment from. Between the just-right-amount-of-stuff-to-do-without-overwhelming-you franchise mode and nifty mini- and party games, there’s plenty to do this fall. Details such as these are creative and welcome additions to a sports game; 2K has done some outside of the box thinking to make their NHL title unique. It may be exactly what they need to distinguish themselves from their competitor, though, at this point, it probably won’t be enough to be the top choice amongst hockey fans. EA Sports still has the best hockey game on the market.

2K’s take on the NHL franchise has always been poor in comparison to EA’s, and this edition is no exception. If you want to buy a hockey game it has to be NHL 09, the gameplay is untouchable and you’ll be playing it all year. I recommend downloading the NHL 2K9 demo from the marketplace and see how you get on with the controls and camera angles. If you find it just as frustrating as I’ve mentioned then don’t bother. There’s nothing here that makes you think ‘wow that was great’ and you’ll be in hospital having your stomach pumped when you eat the disc out of pure hatred for the controls, glitches and camera angles.

So there you have it: 2K9 comes off as a misguided effort to streamline the experience and create gameplay where realism comes before responsiveness. There are a few nice developments, but I can’t help thinking that somewhere in the universe there has to be something better in the galactic realm of video hockey. But whatever, it’s a sports game. To each their own - no reason to get all madhouse about it.
