Bug
The initial release of the game had a bug which prevented playing the game through. It was removed from the shops in less than a week, and the new version came out the same month.
Title
The original title
Duke Nukem: Planet of the Babes ran into legal trouble with the
Planet of the Apes franchise holders forcing a last minute change to
Land of the Babes. Producer
Phil Gelber had this to say in an interview with
3D Realms:
Q: How much of an irritation or an issue was it regarding the name change from Planet of the Babes to Land of the Babes?
A: It was pretty irritating from the standpoint that we had been using the name for a while, and although it was a great name, Land of the Babes wasn't a take off of Planet of the Apes. To be honest, there really isn't enough material to base a good game on Planet of the Apes.
Q: Once you found out the name of the game had to be changed, how much of the game itself did that affect? Did you make any other changes to the game besides the name?
A: Like I mentioned above, we really didn't have any Planet of the Apes materials in the game, so the changes were minor. We had to change all the title screens, and the like, as well as change a few audio lines. For example you won't get to hear Duke say, "You damn dirty apes." Shame some people just can't take a joke.
