DescriptionIn Shelter, the player takes control of a mother badger who has to protect her cubs from the dangers of nature. The game starts out in the badgers' burrow and from there the player has to escort the cubs into the wild in search for a new home. In the beginning there are five cubs who will follow their mother wherever she goes. However they will need to be fed or they will start to show signs of fatigue. Root vegetables like carrots and turnips can be dug from the soil while apples can be knocked down from trees. Animals, such as frogs, rodents and foxes can also be eaten but are harder to get access to as the player must use stealth to sneak up on the prey. Most food sources are in low quantities and only one cub can eat at a time. Therefore it's important that the cubs are equally fed or some of them might not make it.
The game is linear and consists of a number of levels each with different threats. Dangers include predators such as birds of prey. When up against these the player needs to sneak in long grass to avoid being seen. If a cub is out in the open for too long it will get caught. There are also environmental dangers to watch out for like forest fires and over flowing rivers. Most of the game takes place during the day but there is also a section during night time. Here the vision is limited and the cubs can get scared by the sounds of lurking predators. They then run off and if they are out of the player's view for too long they might get snatched away in the dark.
An extra mode, Nurture, was added after release. It's played over a period of thirty days and the player has to return to it each day to gather food to the cubs. The player is then able to follow their growth.
