The last of the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong Country games marks a solid entry, but the series appears to be running out of steam. Sure the graphics look terrific and there are some minor new features, but we've played this game before. This time Dixie Kong is joined by a new character named Kiddy Kong, a cute baby ape. The gameplay here is as good as you would expect, but unchanged from previous games. If you completed the first two Donkey Kong Country games and still can't get enough, then you will enjoy this. But if you're not one of those three people, you may want to try something new.

For those of you new to the world of Donkey Kong Country, you are in for a treat. Whichever game in the series you are playing, you're almost guaranteed to have a good time, whether you are playing alone or with a friend. There are tons of levels, lots of nifty bonus rounds, plenty of goofy creatures to pounce on or throw barrels at, and just enough hidden items and areas to keep even the most jaded gamer content. Even though it is similar to the previous games in the series, video games just don't get much better than this.

The only drawbacks to DKC3 are it's extreme youthfulness (the babies make the game a little too cute at times) and it's basic hop-n-bop similarity to it's forerunners. Some cynics may have a "been there, beat that" attitude, but most folks will go ape for this must-play game.

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble holds up very well as a great SNES side-scrolling platformer adventure, even 11 years after its original release. And while its predecessor, Diddy's Kong Quest, is likely a better game overall, DKC3 probably holds more value because so many people missed it the first time around. If you enjoyed the first two Donkey Kong Country games and never got around to this one, confidently put down the scratch and give it a try. It's a game that deserves to be noticed.

I think I may have mentioned this before, but there are 16-bit titles that come out and make me really chuckle since they rival the 32 and 64-bit games. Besides the graphics being incredible, the gameplay is some of the best seen in awhile. Even after multiple plays. I liked going through and seeing some of the cool things in the level like playing as the elephant or avoiding the saw in the tree level. The interaction with characters was another cool feature. Owners of the Super NES should be pleased with this third installment - it's another great one to put in your library.
