This solid, tongue-in-cheek boxing cart's a surefire winner. In fact, Don King's probably trying to figure out how to climb into this SNES ring. Punch-Out is super!
Super Power (Sweden)
The Video Game Critic
Super Punch Out has long been considered one of most entertaining boxing video games ever, and this version is quite faithful to the arcade. Each of the huge, comical boxers has his own distinct personality and fighting style. Using an innovative point-of-view, your boxer is semi-transparent, affording you an ideal view your opponent. By learning each boxer's weaknesses, you can gradually progress up the ranks, and the game saves up to eight player's statistics to battery back-up. What's great about Super Punch Out is how it never takes itself very seriously. This is pure arcade fun, and I'd take this over a realistic boxing game any day of the week.
I might say that I like this game better than Punch-Out for the Nintendo, just because of the improved graphics and sound effects. Everything else that was solid gold in the original is kept in this one. The only thing I crave is a little more challenge. It did not take me very long to beat the game.
Large, colorful graphics and easy-to-learn controls makes anyone who sees this game want to pick up the controller and the increasingly challenging computer foes keeps them glued to their seat once they do. So what are ya' waiting for, champ?
Game Informer Magazine
One of the best new additions was Time Attack Mode, which kept track of the best knockout times for every opponent. You can spend hours just trying to shave off precious milliseconds in the attempt to KO Super Machoman before the one minute mark. Everyone who enjoyed the original is encouraged to check out its excellent 16-bit sequel.
Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
I've been waiting for this one for a while - and the wait was worth it. The Super NES version is truly a winner. Once you pick up the controller, you won't have any problems at all on the game technique. Fight never-before-seen boxers in past Punch-Out games. This may not be a realistic boxing game, but it still has fantastic gameplay.
Lens of Truth
Utilizing the new power of the SNES, Super Punch-Out!! delivered an uppercut to the player. Visually the game is stunning and a cartoon like feel made Super PO an instant classic. Only falling short by not improving much on the original game is what keeps Super PO from being a gem on the SNES. Otherwise, Super Punch-Out!! is a retro game that will be played till the end of time. No real gamer should have missed out on this one. If you did, consider yourself shamed and get it on the Virtual Console.
The new Wii sequel to the Punch-Out!! series is shipping to stores in just another few weeks, and Nintendo's displayed excellent timing (for once) in releasing Super Punch-Out!! in Virtual Console form to pave the way for the new revival of the franchise. This is a great game that you may well have missed out on in the SNES era, and getting to download it for just eight bucks is an excellent value.
Video Games & Computer Entertainment
Super Punch-Out!! is a really tough game, but it's one in which repeated playing (and you will be playing it a lot) really pays off. Once you learn the ropes, you learn how to actually fight better, how to take advantages of your opponents weaknesses and how to really stick it to 'em when you need to. What I though at first to be an unfair computer eventually turned out to be a weakling after I went around the block a couple of times. I became a boxing fool.
All Game Guide
If you don't spend too much time comparing it to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Super Punch Out!! is actually an awesome boxing game that would make a fine addition to any Super NES library. If only Glass Joe could have been there to see it.
