When you start a new game you may choose between 8 existing leaders and additional customizable ones. All leaders come with unique racial traits as well as spells, items and abilities.

Take your army into battle! The pre-battle screen will tell the relative strengths of each army and will allow you to battle tactically or auto-resolve the fight.

Your heroes can cast many spells that they learn through leveling or acquire from quests or artifacts. Alternatively, warriors can use special abilities in battle.

Each unit has its own resistances to different physical attacks and magics, as well as many other special qualities and abilities.

After winning a battle you will receive gold, items and XP, which will go to both your heroes and your troops. They each can gain levels and grow in strength.

When your heroes level up they may choose one special ability out of five. Some abilities have several tiers to them which rewards heroes that persist in certain skills.

You can meet and hire additional heroes. The stronger they are the more expensive they get, but they often come with their own powerful gear.

You will find many artifacts after looting creature dwellings (that generate wandering monsters) or completing quests, which can be equipped by your heroes.

Occasionally you'll run into a handful of special questing zones. These hold the greatest prizes, but also hide the toughest enemies.

Ordinary quest come in several difficulties (from weak to epic) and generally involve from one to three battles.

After clearing a world quest zone, the land becomes fertile. Cities can only be built in specific tiles (the ones that have numbers on them - they represent base food, production and magical essence).

Once your town grows it can be upgraded into a city. There are 3 city type: Conclaves specialize in producing mana and research, Fortresses in units and Towns in food and gold.

As cities grow they can be upgraded further into ever more specialized paths.

To grow your borders and take hold of mines and magic resources you'll need to construct outposts. These too can be upgraded in various ways.

Your heroes can cast overland spells on cities, units or other locations. These spells are also gained from the magical levels of the casting hero, but some can be researched in the tech tree.

Within your territory your heroes can buy and sell many items. Other friendly nations may have different items for sale if you visit their borders.

When dealing with other nations you can see how they perceive you and why, and trade gold, technologies, resources for the ones you need or even for treaties.

There are several ways to win a game - conquering all, forging alliances, casting the Spell of Making, having the highest score at the end date or finishing the main quest.
