From the music to the textures to the familiar fly-by-the-seat-of-a-rat's-pants gameplay, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is an excellent game. Innovation, or lack thereof, is the only thing keeping the game out of the 90s. But you know what they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Crash's gameplay is far from broken. In fact, it is as refined as ever. I'm ready for the next one.

Crash Bandicoot is a game that isn't annoying to be around while someone else plays it (something I wish were true of more console games). It's okay for almost all ages and doesn't expose kids to anything they wouldn't see in a Road Runner cartoon. And you may even get non-console playing people to play it.

Crash Bandicoot 5: The Wrath of Cortex is one of the better platformers on the X-Box, especially if you are a fan of the Crash series. While the levels are fairly small and short, there's plenty of replayability for those who want to achieve a 100% completion score. The overall quality of the presentation helps Crash Bandicoot 5 achieve a real comic book feel both visually and aurally. Hardcore gamers will find the game a breeze to beat, but for everyone else the game will provide a light but enjoyable challenge marred by the overly difficult boss sections. Overall, Crash Bandicoot 5 is a solid platformer which seems very similar to previous Crash games, which is not at all a bad thing at all.

To a certain extent, I commend Traveller’s Tales for upholding the 32-bit legacy, but at the same time, I really want to ask them why they didn’t take the game to the next level. Every little morsel of platforming goodness in The Wrath of Cortex has already been done to death on the PlayStation. While still entertaining, you just can’t help crying out for something new. If you haven’t played all of the Crash games, definitely take a look. This is the best platformer on the Xbox. Furthermore, if you were disgusted with the overabundance of loading times in the PlayStation 2 version, you’ll be happy to hear that the level transitions in the Xbox version are almost seamless. Although not prominently displayed, the Crash model has been enhanced with fuzzy, real-time fur. This is a decent platformer that newbies should invest in, but it really does nothing for the hardcore Crash fanatics out there.

Game Chronicles
Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is a polished platform game that outshines its predecessors despite the all-to-familiar gameplay. What it lacks in innovation is quickly compensated for with addictive, and non-stop fun and challenging gameplay. My only complaint is that the fun is over all-to-quickly, but considering the lack of quality platform titles on the Xbox you can’t go wrong with Crash even if it’s just for a weekend rental.

If you’ve been hankering for some down-home Crash Bandicoot platforming action then you’ll be right at home with this title. If however your tastes are a bit more discriminating then it might be a good idea to avoid purchase all together and opt for a single night rental.

Game Over Online
It’s nice to see Crash return on a next-generation platform, even with his leap over to the Xbox. Unfortunately it feels like the originality that the franchise once had has run a little stale. While an old adage is don’t fix what isn’t broken, the other side of the coin is substantially improving and innovating upon the features that work. Crash fans will probably love his latest adventure, but other gamers will most likely pass on this one.

Crash is a fun game for the most part, and not a terrible pick up. However, it fails in some areas, like proper game balance and correct use of surround sound. Those who love the series will probably be more thrilled than others who haven't followed previous adventures of Crash. While the game is attractive, there could have been more done to the game to fix the balancing problems. The game is only a few hours long and only completists will go back to find everything in the game. A good rental, but not likely to be a good purchase.

With just one adequate platforming option available on the Xbox, Crash Bandicoot's latest outing is worth a rental to see if its trial-and-error gameplay is for you. Fans of the franchise will be happy to see that the Crash formula has been not been altered very much, but those hoping for the next evolution in platforming games will be sorely disappointed by The Wrath of Cortex's reliance on the tried and true. The graphics are simple yet solid and the gameplay mechanics are dated, but the addition of new vehicles spices up the proceedings a bit. With that said, there's no hiding that The Wrath of Cortex is a slightly updated version of the orange marsupial's 1998 debut on the PlayStation.

XBox Solution (XBS)
While overall it a decent game, the frustration level at times can be a deterrent. Had the jumping mechanics been tweaked a bit, and dying after barely touching an enemy been altered, this game could have easily scored higher. It’s no secret that fans of the series will enjoy the Wrath of Cortex, but you’ll probably have hoped they put a bit more into it.

The sounds are about the same: good, cartoony, and fun, complete with droll celebrity voice-overs for the villains. Controls are a little better the marble madness style stages seem more tweaked, and while Crash still has some jump-timing problems, he handles pretty smoothly for a 3D platformer although the insidious underwater levels should be used as an example in classes on how not to make a 2D shooter. Time passes, technology advances, but change really eludes his supreme Bandicootiness. When it comes to Crash opinions, chances are you already know where you stand. Love it or hate it, Wrath of Cortex Xbox is more of more of the same.

The Video Game Critic
Given a slick XBox makeover, Wrath of Cortex is definitely a step up from the PS2 original. The graphics have been totally redone and look significantly more polished and slightly more detailed than the PS2 version. You'll even notice some fuzzy fur on Crash during close shots. Best of all, the horrendous loading times are gone - the Xbox only needs a few seconds to load each stage. The gameplay however has remained unchanged, which means you'll still need to deal with lousy jumping controls and unforgiving collision detection.
