Overview edit · view history
BreakAway designs and develops entertainment, military and medical games with particular expertise in strategy, sports and historical simulations for all platforms. It was founded in 1998, and is located in the state of Maryland, USA.
Led by industry veteran Douglas Whatley, BreakAway includes core development teams from OT Sports, MicroProse Software, Avalon Hill and TalonSoft.
The company has had long-term relationships with several major publishers, and has produced products for Hasbro, Disney, ABC Sports, MicroProse, Impressions Games, Firaxis and EA Los Angeles, among others. BreakAway's proprietary software model is in use at the Army War College, Naval War College, and The Joint Chiefs Office of Net Assessment.
In approximately 2007 the company removed the word "games" from its name and now refers to itself as BreakAway, Ltd.
In May 2008 BreakAway signed a license agreement with the Texas A&M University System for the exclusive, worldwide rights to Pulse!! - the Virtual Clinical Learning Lab. The agreement grants BreakAway the rights to further develop and market the virtual learning platform and its accompanying technology portfolio, including the hardware engines, software, simulation models and developer tools that power the platform. The first application of the Pulse!! technology will be to develop a dental implant training simulation to better train dental students in decision making protocol and clinical skills needed for dental implant procedures.
