Digital Eclipse Software, Inc.
Overview
The story of Digital Eclipse's involvement with classic gaming has almost passed into legend. DE's founders were working on emulating older
Williams arcade games on an Apple Macintosh - they succeeded (with
Defender,
Stargate, and
Joust) and showed Williams the results. DE ended up partnering with Williams to begin bringing classic arcade games from Williams' considerable catalog (
Atari,
Bally,
Midway, Williams, and assorted smaller companies) to home systems and consoles.
In 2003, the company merged with
ImaginEngine Corp. into
Backbone Entertainment, and two years later, in March 2005, they merged with
The Collective into
Foundation 9 Entertainment.
Currently, Digital Eclipse Software is used as a brand name and a publishing label for games developed by the
Backbone studios or cooperating companies such as
Other Ocean Interactive.
