Overview edit · view history

Simutronics Corporation was founded in 1987. Incorporated in Virginia, Simutronics has offices in the St. Louis, Missouri and Washington, DC areas with more than 300 employees and contractors around the world. The company is privately held.

Simutronics is one of the pioneers of the multiplayer online gaming experience. The company started off with GemStone II on GEnie, in the late 80's, which quickly evolved into GemStone III, a pay for play MUD type game. Their next game was CyberStrike which became Game of the Year in 1993 as an online graphical "mech" game, the first of its type.

Simutronics capitalized on its Interactive Fiction Engine that ran GemStone III by developing DragonRealms, Modus Operandi (in partnership with Time-Warner) and Hercules and Xena: Alliance of Heroes. Many of these games continue to be available at Simutronics' web site (www.play.net), and have loyal fans.

In 1998, Simutronics made its foray into 3D accelerated games by teaming with Publisher 989 (soon to be Verant Interactive / Sony) and putting out CyberStrike 2, a mech game that recreated the excitement of the original game.

The latest in the Gemstone saga is GemStone IV, which they state is "the longest-running text-based game in the industry".

Their current project is Hero's Journey, a 3D massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG).
