Rob Hubbard

English-born Rob Hubbard is nothing less than a living legend in his own right - or at least that's the answer you'll get if you ask any nostalgic Commodore 64 owner. Between 1985 and 1989 he composed the music for more than 75 Commodore 64 games, including such hits as Sanxion, Auf Wiedersehen Monty, Battle of Britain, The Human Race, International Karate and Gerry the Germ. During that period he also composed for other platforms, like the Atari ST, Amstrad and eventually the Amiga.

He never really intended to write music for games. Originally he set out to write music-related educational software for the Commodore 64, but publishers (Gremlin Graphics, to be specific) turned out to like the music better than the education, so to speak, and Rob was asked to compose the soundtrack for the game Thing on a Spring. The game was a hit and Rob Hubbard's career was on a roll.

His ability to compose music that literally 'loaded' a game with atmosphere, made a strong impression on a whole generation of computer-gamers, and naturally he is the object of some worship on the great shrine that is the internet.

In 1989 he joined Electronic Arts, initially as a composer, but he still works there as an Audio-Technical Director. He still claims he has not given up composing, but is simply lacking the time to sit down and write. His future plans include writing some music for a symphony orchestra. If he ever does write it, and it gets performed, you can be sure there'll be a crowd of old C64-freaks willing to kill for a ticket.
