REDALERT

by Olaf Lubeck

The goal is to defend your installation from destruction by the stinging space meanies and their awesome allies, the bareboned thudputters. Your first line of defense is the Van Apple Rediation Belts which protect your civilization from infiltration by both space meanies and thudputters. However, these belts can be penetrated by the stinging fire of the space meanies and are practically defenseless against putting thuds. Nonetheless, a brave commander does not wait blithely for annihilation, but utilizes the considerable defenses at his or her disposal. These include:

**2 Multi-barreled precision cambered meanie blasters

1 Ultra-sensitive wide-range multi-frequency radar

1 Government surplus anti-thud rocket

1 Van Apple Rediation Belt repair kit**

You use the meanie blasters to blast both meanies and thudputters. Press button (0) on your joystick or the space bar to fire. Once you lose both meanie blasters you lose the game.

The radar device causes the range of the blast from your meanie blaster to be greater than it would be without your radar.

Protecting your radar from destruction is a good strategy for a high score.

You may fire your anti-thud rocket by pressing button (1) or "S." You will receive an additional anti-thud rocket at every 2,500 point interval. The rocket will destroy all aliens on the screen. You must use your rocket in order to receive a new one, since the rocket platform can only hold one rocket. If the platform is destroyed you don't get any more rockets.

Preserving your Van Apple Rediation Belt repair kit is of paramount importance. The kit is kept inside the thing which looks like a gas tank. At 10,000 points (if the tank is still there) you will receive a completely new red shield above your installation. You c an have this renewed again at 30,000, 50,000, and 70,000 points. If this isn't sufficient, you're too good to be wasting your time playing computer games.

Every 15 to 20 thousand points, a wayward enemy supply ship will zip across the screen. If you blast this ship, any of your weapons which have been lost, such as your meanie blasters, radar, repair kit, or rocket platform will be restored. You won't get much of a shot at this supply ship—so don't blow it.

A joystick is highly recommended to play this game. If you have a joystick, press "J" to start the game, or "H" to start with automatic firing (just hold the button down and your blasters keep blasting). When you destroy an enemy all the rockets that it has fired will also disappear. Remember that.

Those of you brazen enough to attempt to play this game on the keyboard may press "K" to begin. The left and right arrows move your sights left and right. The "A" and keys move them up and down. Press Space Bar to fire your meanie blasters, the "S" key to fire your rocket.

If these control keys are not to your liking, press "L" instead of "K," and you will be prompted to chose the keys most convenient for you.
