Grab your whip and fedora and join Indiana Jones in a globe-spanning race to unearth the mysterious "Infernal Machine".

Indiana Jones's first adventure on the N64 couples a highly creative story with thoughtful, puzzle-oriented gameplay, but quirky controls and a lack of old-fashioned wham-blam action may put off adrenaline freaks.

Indiana Jones is currently only available for purchase through Blockbuster's online store.

Set in the late 1940s, the story pits Indy against communist operatives in a race for a legendary device once housed in the Tower of Babel. Indy literally circles the globe to gather the Infernal Machine's missing pieces. Once reassembled, the Infernal Machine allows him to leap into an alternate dimension, called the Aetherium. The game comprises all 16 levels from the 1999 PC game, plus a bonus level.

Tying the convoluted caper together are lengthy cinema scenes. As in Battle for Naboo, LucasArts has used Factor 5 voice compression technology to squeeze in lots and lots of talk. The clever dialogue, well-read by the voice talent, makes for some remarkably colorful characterizations, although Indy's habit of musing aloud whenever he starts a new level or encounters a locked door slows down the action. The thunderous Indiana Jones theme intros each level. Music within each level is muted, perhaps to help keep your mind on solving the puzzles.

The graphics which have been largely imported from the PC game. The developers ably used a rich palette to give each level of this globe-trotting travelogue a distinct look. The blocky backgrounds work fine in the subterranean ruins, but detract from lush landscapes like the Olmec Valley. Depending on the camera angle, Indy's arms can look frightfully skinny. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine uses the Expansion Pak for enhanced graphics.

Gameplay is linear. After the tutorial, most of the levels are dominated by a series of puzzles, each of which must be solved in order to move on to the next. For example, in central Asia's Shambala Sanctuary, Indy must activate an ancient clock tower and ring its bell in order to obtain a key, which admits him to an entirely new section of the level.

Two or three levels are typically grouped together; for example, entrance to the Sanctuary is obtained by a series of raft trips down the nearby Tian Shian mountains. After leaving the Sanctuary, Indy flies to Palawan Lagoon in the Pacific Ocean, then enters a nearby volcano and temple before a Transpacific flight to another three-level sequence beginning in an Aztec temple.

Along the way, Indy collects weapons, ammo, medical supplies and money, which can be used between levels to purchase additional ammo and medical supplies. Searching each level for its 10 treasures adds replay value, but these are not needed to finish the game.

Indy is lightly armored, but so are his infrequent attackers. Scorpions and snakes and other predatory fauna are just as dangerous as Indy's human rivals, since their venom will quickly sap his health.

But the bulk of the game is taken up by figuring out the elaborate puzzles. Many of these require running multiple errands, platform-jumping and using Indy's tools, notably his trademark Bullwhip, which allows him to swing across chasms. Indy also gets to swim, crawl, run, climb, drive a jeep and ride a raft and mine cart. Accessing Indy's many items is quite easy, thanks to a Zelda-like control scheme that allows you to assign items to C Buttons.

Sometimes the controls make jumping harder than it should be. It's often difficult to get Indy lined up just right to make a leap. You often can't see Indy's feet, which means you'll have to guess when to jump. Because you can't move Indy when he's in first-person perspective, his head will often obscure the platform to which he is jumping.

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is a highly cinematic adventure that captures the zest of the movies. Indy fans who like tough puzzles will enjoy it.
