Colorado 1880. David O'Brien, a penniless trapper, canoes up the South Platte river in search of adventure and riches.

Deep in the wilderness, he meets a dying Cheyenne Indian. Vowing to bury him in the style of a Warrior, O'Brien is rewarded with an ancient map showing the way to the legendary Lost Gold Mine of Pocahontas.

The route will lead him through Pawnee territory, the most fearsome of Indian tribes, across hostile wolf-infested land... and means he must shoot the terrifying white-water rapids of the Colorado in a flimsy Buffalo-hide canoe. But there is no going back now for O'Brien is haunted by the scent of Gold.
