Rogue

aka: AGB_Rogue, ClassicRogue, Rogue: Exploring the Dungeons of Doom, Rogue: The Adventure Game
Moby ID: 1743

Never the same game twice. That's quite a promise. But it's the reason this classic continues to be the most popular game on college mainframe computers. ROGUE is so full of unpredictable monsters, ever-changing magic and hidden dangers that it's never the same game twice.

Enter the Dungeons of Doom. See for yourself. Try to find your way to the Amulet of Yendor, but don't bother mapping the rooms. They'll be different the next time. As a matter of fact, the Dungeons change every time you enter. So do the monsters. Remember that troll you fought on level 18? He might be an urvile next time. Or worse yet, a dragon. There's only one thing you can count on... your enchanted sword.

ROGUE. You could spend hundreds of hours playing it... and you still wouldn't uncover all its secrets.

ROGUE. The college mainframe classic finally comes to the home computer.

*** Explore 26 Levels Before You Reach the Amulet of Yendor. * 26 Types of Unpredictable Monsters. * Fast-Play Option Included. * Records High Scores and Rankings in the Hall of Fame. * Save Game Feature Included. * One Player.**

Temple of Apshai Trilogy. The classic subterranean fantasy. Now, this all-time bestseller and its sequels "Upper Reaches of Apshai" and "Curse of Ra" have been given enhanced graphics and put on one disk. To make it easier than ever for you to, well, meet the grim reaper.

Create your own character with your own personality traits. Go for the glory. Or go for the gold. Map 12 levels of dark, underground mazes and nearly 600 rooms as you encounter skeletal bats, ghouls, zombies, and other unpleasant creatures of middle earth. And hear new sound effects that'll send chills down your monitor.

Includes an 80-page book on the complete lore of Apshai - the lost culture beneath the Sahara. Of course, it's all pure fiction. Or is it?

Rogue. This is one classic that's definitely not for beginners. Thousands have explored its 26 ominous levels. Maybe two have made it out in one piece. It's a world of underground mazes, bizarre places and magical treasures. Rogue has a mythology all its own, with one fatal reality. It's never the same game twice. So forget mapping. This one's on pure intuition and brainpower.

Enter the Dungeon of Doom. Your challenge is to recover The Amulet of Yendor, and make it back to Level 1. Not so simple, is it?

Oh, and just so you won't think we're bad sports, here's an enchanted sword. Hope you know how to use it.

ROGUE

Your Mission, to search through the Dungeons of Doom and return with the Amulet of Vendor (or die in the attempt).
For protection you have some armour, your trusty enchanted mace and a bow with a quiver full of arrows, for food you have provision for just one meal.
As you descend the dungeon you will find more food, better armour and weapons lett behind by previous unsuccessful seekers for the Amulet. You will also find hidden treasure, gold pieces, magical items, potions, rings and scrolls that will help you in your ultimate goal, the quest for the Amulet itself.
But between you and your goal there are many fearsome monsters and fiendish traps that will challenge all your skills. If you succeed you will join the Guildmaster's Hall of Fame, if you fail future adventurers will collect useful items from your remains.

Rogue™

Deep in the Dungeons of Doom, you're fighting a hungry and powerful troll for your life. You've avoided other creatures' blows before, but the troll swings and scores a hit that weakens you. Hoping to regain strength, you find and quaff a magic potion. Great Vendor! It's the wrong one. The potion blinds you! But wait...drawing an enchanted sword from your pack, you swing blindly at the troll and strike a fatal blow. As you grope in the dark for the troll's gold, something hits you — a nymph steals your magic ring, a ring that could be crucial in your quest for the Amulet of Yendor . . .
ROGUE introduces a new generation of adventure games, different from any you have ever encountered.
Unlike other games, ROGUE presents a fresh challenge every time you play, no matter how long or how often you play. You don't succeed by memorizing events but only by honing your character's skills. You must combine magic, weaponry and determination to gain the Amulet of Yendor and escape the Dungeons of Doom. ROGUE keeps the action fast and non-stop by displaying and mapping out each of the many dungeon levels you'll explore. And ROGUE is so full of unpredictable monsters, ever-changing magic and hidden dangers that it's never the same game twice. No wonder ROGUE is the most popular game running under the UNIX operating system.
Now you can play ROGUE on your IBM PC. Don't wait to challenge yourself.

Back of Box (AIDS) - DOS (US)

In the early 1980s, a computer game emerged that changed the world of fantasy gaming forever. Randomly generated rooms meant that each journey into the infamous Dungeons of Doom was unique. The potent combination of random generation with perma-death proved to be intoxicating, and the game was so influential it spawned an entire genre: "Rogue-likes".

Now you too can experience the thrill of dungeon crawling for the fabled Amulet of Yendor in the original ASCII adventure.

  • Battle dozens of unique and powerful enemies.
  • Gather armor, weapons, food and other items to help you on your quest.
  • Scour rooms for secret hidden doors and traps.
  • Discover strange magical spells and potions, which have different wonderous effects every time you play the game.
  • Survive through 26 randomly generated levels, each more tricky and dangerous than the last, to find the Amulet, then escape... if you can!

*How long has it been?

How many lifetimes have passed since I began my sojourn through this maze of underground passageways, of damp, dimly lit chambers? How long have I been alone, the only human among a menacing crew of hideous subterranean beasts, stumbling over forlorn reminders that others have passed this way before me... never to return!

Long before I forgot the warmth of the noonday sun or the refreshing coolness of the evening breeze, I forgot my name. Call me what you will. I am the Rogue.*

For Rogue aficionados, you may wish to know that this particular version is Epyx Rogue v1.49 for the IBM PC.
