Characters

This is the first time that a collection of Nintendo based characters have been brought together in one game (Mario, Samus, Link, etc.). Super Mario Kart was the first time a collection of Mario based characters was used.

Japanese Sound Differences

The Japanese version has different sound effects. For example, when attacking an opponent with punches and kicks, they sound like "thwaps". As another example, when attacking with the Beam Sword, it sounds a lot like the lightsaber from the Star Wars movies.

Live Event

Nintendo's marketing for the game included Super Smash Bros. Slamfest '99, a live fight between the characters billed as " a no-holds-barred, anything goes, toe-to-toe slamfest", staged at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in early 1999 and streamed via RealPlayer. A photo of the actors alongside their costumes surfaced in 2020 and spread widely, and a few grainy images and event descriptions have been found, however no footage of the event itself is known to survive.
