C-evo

aka: Civ Evolution

Description

C-evo (short for Civilization Evolution) is a 4X strategy game similar to Sid Meier's Civilization II. The game features hotseat multiplayer with up to nine players. It also features an API for developing new and better artificial intelligences. In fact, one of the main design goals behind the game was to improve upon the lacking artificial intelligence of Civ II.

As in Civ II, the main objective of the game is to develop your nation into a modern economic powerhouse that is capable of taking the next leap in human evolution: interstellar colonization. In the process you will expand your territory, engage in foreign relations, exploit natural resources and--if fate should have it--conduct wars with neighboring nations. Progress in the game is marked by several milestones where your nation reaches certain historical levels, such as the Industrial Revolution and modernization, with the last one being the end goal of the game.

The game does not currently support Internet multiplayer.

A clone better than Sid's except in multiplayer

The Good
The micro / grind removal tools in this game are awesome. With one key press the worker builds a preset set of improvements on its square. This is very useful because most civ like games have multiple items that need to be ordered per tile but only one decision in the build. City population placement can be automated with the Governor in each city set to prefer some resources over others. The governor works well imho.

The multi-city queue is amazing and makes it actually possible to manage 40 cities effectively, better than any of Sid's governors. This tool is the most useful of the automation tools. Instead of adding a new building to the queue of each city set those cities to one queue and modify that. My explanation might not fill out all the details but like i said it works amazingly.

The AI (Seti AI if I remember correctly) is strong enough to almost always defeat me without cheating. It is more difficult than the second most difficult setting in Civilization V. Cevo can run auto AI tournaments and tell the user which AI are the best.

Very few computer resources are used even to run 8 of the best AI.

An additional feature is the ability to design units from multiple sliders and abilities. This is similar to SM's Alpha Centauri unit design and it works out well enough.

This is the first Civilization-like game in which i actually conquered the whole world without getting bored from the micro management.

The Bad
Multiplayer is too hard to set up and find an opponent. After winning once against the best AI there was not much for me to do. Graphics are a bit old.

The Bottom Line
Cevo is a free Civilization clone with critical features that Sid's should have had long ago.
