Back of box - Game Boy Color

Midway's mad monsters are back to annihilate architecture all over the globe.

Like the N64 hit of the same name, Universal Tour for Game Boy Color stars three hungry mutants from outer space: Curtis, Boris and Ruby. In addition to creating chaos and consuming civilians, their mission is to rescue George, Lizzy and Ralph, the original stars of Rampage: World Tour.

Players can terrorize three continents on their quest, visiting virtually every famous city on the globe. The goal in each city is to demolish every building in site by punching, kicking and jumping.

If you find a beautiful building, smash it. If a car cruises by, step on it. When a helicopter shoots at you, swat it. If you spot a crowd of locals, pick 'em up and chow down.

Rampage 2: Universal Tour is basically a button-masher, but the repetitive task of tearing apart cities is a lot of fun. Using a Game Link Cable, two friends can work together to smash cities simultaneously. The Pak is equipped with a password feature, in case your thumb needs a break from the continuous concrete crushing.

Rampage 2: Universal Tour is compatible only with Game Boy Color.

Have we got a package tour for you! Going alone is fine, but chewing the scenery with friends is more fun.

Midway's feeding frenzy is back, promising more thrills, chills and opportunities for bad references to The Monster Mash. While the single-player adventure requires all the strategizing ability of, say, a game of Peek-a-boo, the multiplayer mode delivers jolly good fun. Munching all those humans and fries are likely to give you an appetite, so make sure you've had a good meal before playing.

The extremely simple idea is to punch, kick and eat your way through each of Rampage 2's 100 cities before the citizenry can be evacuated. Given that each burg has about as many buildings as a Wyoming truck stop and that the local gendarmes seem to be armed with nothing more powerful than spitballs, you'll be finished with most levels before you can say, "Supersize it, please."

Tempting as it may be to simply climb on top of every building and stomp it to the ground, by doing so you'll miss out on the considerable goodies hidden inside. An hourglass gives you extra time, pork chops and other foods give you energy, a boxing glove puts extra oopmh in your jabs, and TVs, couches and stereos give you extra points. But watch out for bottles of poison and other anti-appetizers.

To clear the palate, after every five levels you get a timed bonus round. Our favorite, People Splat, challenges you to kick or stomp as many people as possible. Just be sure to wipe off your shoes afterward.

If racking up all those frequent-feaster miles gets a mite lonely, team up with a pal or two in the rampage a trois multiplayer mode. Select team members with complementary skills, deploying good climbers like George to shinny up skyscrapers while top walkers like Ralph take care of the ground traffic. While you're collaborating lay the scenery low, remember that the bigfoot with the most points wins. If you see a tasty morsel, don't hesitate to knock one of your fellow ogres out of the way.

Rampage 2 looks good, with nicely shaded sprites and colorful explosions, but there's no hiding its 2-D roots. Although the designers tried valiantly to lend a little local flavor to each city -- London has a tower that looks like Big Ben, some Asian buildings have pagoda-style roofs -- the levels look much the same. And you can't destroy famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. Gee, what fun is that?

All in all, Rampage 2 offers a pleasant diversion if you're in the mood for some extremely mindless fun.
