A delightful little action RPG
The Good
The stand-out point of Revery is definitely the excellent writing and characterization; the protagonist in particular has a vibrantly conveyed, interesting personality. This is further enhanced by the expressive portraits and cut-in graphics used in dialogue scenes. The game's humor has aged very well and rarely comes across as cliched.
Revery has a lot of thought put into little details, like an event that happens if you use your "Fire" magic on an annoying sign in one area.
The combat gameplay is competently done, if not exceptional; the main character being able to use only magic attacks makes it much fresher and more strategic than it would otherwise have been.
The Bad
Some bosses are very difficult by modern standards, and there's too much of a difficulty spike between the easy generic enemies and the tough bosses. The easily manipulated AI of most enemies only contributes to this problem.
The Bottom Line
Revery is an engaging action RPG with a great story and strong, memorable characters. It's aged well and remains easy to pick up and enjoy two decades after its release.
