Lucky for us, he's a good guy.

Let's face it. Super heroes don't come much cooler than Spider-Man. His costume is rad, his sense of humor is spot-on, and he can bench-press 10 tons. If you could bench press 10 tons, do you think you'd be using your powers for good instead of evil? Think about it. Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is one swell super-freak of nature.

Activision, who has already released one killer Spidey game for Nintendo 64 and numerous Spider-Man titles for Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, is now bringing the arachnid hero to Nintendo GameCube. This time, Spidey's adventure is based on the feature film Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe.

Even if you never step foot in a theater to check out the flick, the game will give you a serious dose of the web-swinging style found on the silver screen. The game starts just as Spider-Man is beginning to discover his new super powers. You get to guide a street-clothed Peter Parker as he swings high through the city sky. As the game progresses, so does Spidey's fashion sense. By the time you dig down a few levels into the game, you'll be sporting the slick Spidey suit which we all know and love.

Spider-Man's ultimate foe in both the movie and the game is the Green Goblin, but as you might expect, there is an army of lesser-known thugs and bad guys to take out along the way. More recognizable evil-doers include Shocker, Vulture, Scorpion and experimental HK units compliments of OSCORP INDUSTRIES.

Previous Spider-Man games have been developed by Neversoft, but coding duties for the current Spider-Man game have been handed to Treyarch, located in (I-left-my-wallet-in) El Segundo, California. Thankfully, Treyarch didn't stray too far from the topsy-turvy anti-gravity gameplay mechanics found in Spider-Man for Nintendo 64.

Spider-Man can rise and descend while swinging through the sky, he can bank around buildings, cut web-lines and zip-line either horizontally or vertically. He can use his webbing to wrap up enemies, form web boxing gloves or even weave a web dome. A height-meter has been added to Spidey's radar, which comes in quite handy since Spider-Man can zip-line straight up about 30 stories.

Frequent cut-scenes bring the story to life, with voice acting that won't leave you cringing. Even when Shocker says things like "It's time to stop that freak!" it sounds suitably sinister rather than eye-rollingly cheesy.

So far, Spider-Man appears to be handling the responsibility of his great power very well on Nintendo GameCube. Very well indeed.

Spider-Man is available now. Game Progress is saved to a Nintendo GameCube Memory Card.
