Island of the Lizard King
Description
When you hear of the kidnappings of young men from Oyster Bay to be enslaved by the Lizard King, you and your companion Mungo head to Fire Island to rescue them. Filled with dangerous creatures and poisonous plants at every turn, you are certain to meet your fate while stranded on this hostile island. Will you be able to free the slaves from the mines and defeat the Lizard King?
Island of the Lizard King is an adaptation of the Fighting Fantasy gamebook of the same name. You navigate your way throughout the island by reading the story, then at key points, choosing which path the story will take next. Different paths lead to different locations (which are plotted out on your map of Fire Island as you progress), and sometimes, lead to your untimely death. You start the game by rolling virtual dice to determine your Stamina (health), Skill (with weapons and dexterity), and Luck (your general good fortune). These values are uses throughout the gamebook as you progress, sometimes to determine which path you will take, and of course, in combat.
Combat boils down to you and the enemy rolling two dice simultaneously - the combatant with the higher Skill value scores a hit of 2 Stamina points. During combat, you can test your Luck - if successful, you'll do extra damage. Whenever you use your Luck, the value decreases, making it more difficult to be consistently lucky.
Island of the Lizard King features a gallery of both black and white and coloured art to find, as well as a series of achievements which encourage you to explore as much of the gamebook as possible. Players can also toggle between "classic" and "modern" modes to choose between an old-school look, or a more modern, updated appearance.
