Trivia

Sales

According to publisher Nintendo, Splatoon has sold over 2.42 million copies worldwide since its initial release (as of September 30, 2015). In June 2015, the sales were divided per region in the following way: 476,000 in the Americas, 368,000 in Japan, 230,000 in Europe and 20,000 in Australia and New Zealand.

Sponsored Gear Sets

Version 2.0.0 added gear sets from the brands Famitsu and The SQUID GIRL. The Famitsu set was the result of a design contest held by the Japanese gaming magazine of the same name. The SQUID GIRL gear is based on the protagonist of the manga Shinryaku! Ika Musume, who, like Splatoon's Inklings, is a squid-like humanoid. The manga's artist, Masahiro Anbe, is a fan of Splatoon and had drawn fanart for the game prior to this official collaboration. Later, version 2.8.0 added a weapon and multiple pieces of gear featuring the logo of CoroCoro Comic, a Japanese children's magazine that frequently publishes manga and news features about Nintendo's franchises.

Splatfest Themes

A number of Splatfest themes are either references to other Nintendo series, or are the result of sponsorship deals with other companies. The tie-in Splatfests have included Miitomo, Transformers, Maruchan, 7-Eleven, and Pokémon.

Final Splatfest

The final Splatfest was held worldwide on July 22, 2016, and lasted 48 hours. The choice for this Splatfest was between the two Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie, with Marie winning in all regions. To highlight the finality of the event, the normal Splatfest battle music was replaced with the final boss theme, "Calamari Inkantation".
