Atari Australia Press Quotes - PlayStation 2 & Xbox

This time-period isn't big enough for both you and that zombie.

Nottingham, UK codeshop Free Radical has delivered a good-looking first-person shooter that is packed with blazing fast action and a wicked sense of humor.

Make Like a Zombie and Split

Players complained that the original TimeSplitters for the PS2 awkwardly tacked a weak, thin single-player adventure on robust multiplayer modes. This time around, developer Free Radical went all-out to fashion a deep solo adventure.

The story has various characters chasing zombies and other troublemakers through nine colorful historical eras. These include medieval Paris, the Wild West of 1851, Prohibition-era Chicago gang wars, 1990 Siberia and a robot factory set in a Blade Runner -like futuristic Japan.

Multiple objectives in each level will challenge you to use stealth when pure fire power is ineffective. Generally, objectives vary, depending on which of the three difficulty levels is selected. A special Story Mode feature allows two players to battle cooperatively via split-screen.

The blokes at Free Radical like to leaven straight-ahead action with daft bits of humor. While extinguished enemies in most first-person shooters lie down and quietly fade away, the enemies in TimeSplitters 2 writhe and groan like so many bad actors playing the final act of Hamlet. In Chicago, you're charged with protecting a bookkeeper so nebbishy he makes Carrot Top look like Russell Crowe. Ricocheting bullets and remote-controlled guns and lasers make for intriguing challenges.

A Whole Lotta Modes!

Additional modes will keep you and your friends busy for quite some time. TimeSplitters 2 saves your achievements to a User Profile along with fun stats like Distance Traveled, Bullets Fired, and Average Speed. User Profiles are saved to a Memory Card (not included) and require two free blocks each.

Arcade Mode is a straight-up frag-fest in which you butt heads with computer-controlled bots of various styles and difficulty. A pre-set list of rules determines which weapons are available and which arena you will battle in. Once the dust settles you are awarded a trophy based on your performance.

Challenge Mode is where the developers let their imaginations run wild. In the Infiltration challenge, you must use your stealth skills to avoid detection. Dafter challenges have you take aim at flying monkeys, test your reflexes in a western-style shooting gallery, or smash the priceless stained-glass windows of Notre Dame. Each challenge contains three different missions of varying difficulty.

Up to four players can compete in one of 16 different multiplayer modes, ranging from the standard Deathmatch to the seriously wacky. In Shrink, your character will do just that each time he or she goes kaput, resulting in an increasingly tiny target for opponents. In Flame Tag, the character on fire will lose points until he or she passes the torch by touching another character. Hot, hot, hot!

Mapmaking Mode gives players all the tools to create their own top-notch maps. You can structure your map using a set of pre-made tiles, then place items, lighting and enemies as you wish. The Game Logic Primer even allows you to set up events and objectives so you can create your own chapter in TimeSplitters 2 history.

Graphics

The action in all modes, including multiplayer, zips along at a steady pace. Even with ground-shaking explosions and numerous enemies filling the screen you will rarely, if ever, notice any slowdown.

A time-traveling premise allows the developers to bring a variety of locations to life with stylish exuberance. The character models use relatively few polygons, but their decidedly exaggerated design gives the game a unique look and energy.

TimeSplitters 2 will knock your socks off and send 'em flying. It's fast, funny, and action-packed. Playing solo in the various game modes is rewarding, but you will not get the most out of this game unless you face off with some friends.
