Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is an auto-run platformer based on the 2015 movie of the same name. It is the sequel to The Maze Runner, created as a tie-in to the first movie, and also by the same developer. The story is picked up right after the events of the first movie. After Thomas and the other Gladers escape the WCKD facility early on in the second movie, they eventually end up in a desolate landscape called The Scorch. Just like in the first game the player selects a runner and needs to survive as long as possible, dodging obstacles. The basic gameplay is identical to the first game, but there are several differences.

The player can choose between six surviving Gladers: Frypan, Minho, Newt, Teresa, Thomas and Winston. Only Thomas is available from the start, the others need to be purchased using the basic coins or the premium gems currency. Runners can be assigned to squads of up to three people and they can be customized with several types of outfits made available over time. Outfits provide a distinct look with different colour options, but also grant abilities such as a double score bonus or a coin magnet. There is a social function to share squads with friends.

The runner moves forward automatically and movement consists of swipes left and right to switch lanes, and up and down to jump and slide respectively. The game is split up in several stages with challenges that need to be completed to progress, collect rewards, and unlock character slots and outfits. Loot collected during runs includes currencies, but also several types of materials. Unlocked outfits are crafted using currencies and materials. The game does not have a time limit system like the first game, but has longer runs. There is a higher risk element as all loot is lost when a campsite is not reached before dying, acting as a checkpoint to secure the loot collected so far.

The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases for the premium gems currency. Any purchase immediately removes all 3rd-party ads permanently as well. When dead it is possible to get a revive by watching an advertisement or spending gems. The game supports worldwide leaderboards.
