CrossWords 2.0

Moby ID: 91112

Description

Crosswords 2.0 is a shareware game for one, two or three players. The objective in this game is to score as many point as possible which is done by guessing words and the theme to each puzzle. The game is mouse controlled but players 'buzz in' via the keyboard - each player has their own assigned key

The game area is divided into three main areas, the largest area is the crossword which is always set in a 12x12 grid. Beneath the crossword is an empty Wheel of Fortune style phrase waiting to be completed and to the left of the crossword is the hint window and a button that brings up the next clue.

The game is played in three phases. The player(s) click on the hint button to reveal the next clue, these are almost always short and cryptic and they are displayed above a row of yellow boxes that corresponds to the length of the word the clue refers to. When they have had time to think about the answer the player(s) start the clock and after a ‘Ready’ ‘Set’ ‘Go’ the game starts putting random letters into the yellow boxes. When a player thinks they know the word they press their key, this stops the clock and brings up a small window into which they type their guess. If they are incorrect they lose points but if they are correct they gain points and also gain control of the crossword. Whether they are correct or not the letters from the correct answer are used to fill in some of the blanks in the crossword and/or the phrase beneath it.

When a player has solved a clue correctly they have the option of guessing either a word in the crossword, which they can do as often as they like until they make a mistake or run out of words to complete, or they can attempt to guess the mystery phrase. Every correct word scores points and every incorrect guess loses the player points, guessing the phrase scores points and ends the game.

The shareware version of the game has nine puzzles, the registered version has over forty plus a ‘Puzzle Builder’ and a ‘Clue Builder’

Every now and then, I hear a great story about CrossWords. Now I'm going to write them down, so everyone can enjoy.
  • Victor Myev (of New York NY has used CrossWords to help teach English to Russian students. He's the reason that you can control the speed of CrossWords: the game was a little too fast for them. He even devised a puzzle using the Cyrillic alphabet! Great job Vic!)
Thanks to all the nice people who've sent me puzzles including
