I have played Combat Pilot for more hours than any other game I have ever had - except for Sentinel. DI's Combat Pilot is without any shadow of doubt the most rewarding of the current sweep of air combat simulators and by far the most challenging. The twin joystick option adds to the feel and it even includes a two player serial port option.

FLYING is difficult. It takes years and millions of pounds to train a fighter pilot. Yet the war cry among simulator buffs is "gimme realism". Well guyz, with F-16 Combat Pilot you got it. The game is seriously difficult. There is a quick start option, but it is a bit late to worry about how to get the Westinghouse AN/APG 68(V) radar out of track-while-scan mode and into single-track-target mode when you have a Foxhound and a couple of Floggers unleashing 55kg Aphid missiles at you. You must read the manual before making any serious attempt to play.

Everything has been thought of: the mix between action and realism is terrific. For instance, a safe landing requires much more than just pointing at the runway and plonking the kite down: even with some Ground Control Assistance, it's unlikely you'll pull it off without several hours practise; and then try it without help! If you only buy one combat flight sim, F-16 Combat Pilot must be on the shortlist.

Features include re-armament screens, plane repair facilities, four other Falcons to command, save/load position option, a dual-ST dogfight mode, three types of enemy MiG, over 1500 targets, progressive skill levels, weather effects and intelligence reports. And to really pile the pressure on, there's a compelling strategy element, whereby mission results (good and bad) have a knock-on effect. The performance of other Falcons and ground forces are taken into account when shaping a war-winning strategy. Play F-16 Combat Pilot and you'll find out what multi-role really means.

There is plenty of action to suit the combat hungry and the attention to detail will please and delight the flight purists. Once you get into the campaign game or take on a human you will find yourself playing for hours at a stretch and coming back to it time and time again. As DI keep proving, when it comes to simulations – especially ones involving aircraft – they are very hard to beat.

The necessity to complete all five missions before you are allowed to attempt the campaign mission makes Combat Pilot quite addictive, unlike some other flight sims which are just a series of unconnected battles.

Writing a conclusion for a game review like this is really difficult. It's an incredible feat of programming and has an added strategy element that takes it beyond most flight sims. The term 'game' is really a bit misleading - this is more like a pilot training programme! Once you've mastered this I've no doubt you'd be completely at home in the cockpit of a real F16. The flight manual even goes into the correct flying attire - this is a serious business! And there you have it. Provided there aren't any major bugs in it - and I haven't seen any so far - this has to be the most complete Spectrum flight sim yet. Perhaps the most impressive we'll ever see.

The CGA version is very fast, and although the definition of the graphics leaves a bit to be desired, the overall impression is exhilarating and gameplay is identical to the ST.

Aesthetically it's not quite as appealing as Falcon, but the almost infinitesimal number of missions combined with such extra elements, as tanks, night-flying and the LANTIRN targeting system more than make up for this.

Suffice to say that if you want thrills, spills, and excitement galore then buying this game would go a long way to giving you that, no probs. The graphics are excellent, the line graphics working well and the cockpit display being interesting without being complicated. In fact this can be said for all aspects of F-16 Combat Pilot, lack of this quality probably being the worst failing of most flight simulators. The attempted recreation of an authentic jet-engine sound is good. The controls are responsive, maybe even delicate but there is a definite sense of realism to this simulator.

A pity that this wasn't released last year, when it would have probably done very well. A nice simulator but led down by a bad choice of colours and perhaps it gets a little tedious going through the many menus before each mission. It has arrived after Spectrum Holobyte's Falcon, which has done very well, but F-16 has little to offer which would be worth spending another £25 for.

F-16 is a very complex title that will no doubt prove rewarding in time. The only problem being that it is not involving enough. Remember, to get anything out of a game, you have to be able to get into it.
