Wayne Gretzky for the Nintendo 64 is one incredible title. No more slower frame rates, small players, and limited perspectives: 64-bit action is here and boy what fun it is.

A kinda-sorta sports title for the Nintendo 64, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey is as close to a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) diversion as you're ever likely to see. This game plays exactly like you'd imagine it to. It is the equivalent to NBA Jam on skates. More important than defining what kind of game this is though, is letting you know how much fun I had playing it. Although this can't be ranked high on the N64's list of incredible titles, this does fare quite well in the "Just one more time" category, which can be just as important as any of the other, more technical, components of the N64's games that seem to impress us daily.

If fast, simple hockey appeals to you and your buds, Gretzky's there with all the right bells and whistles. Just don't expect the depth and staying power of EA's NHL series or Sony's Faceoff '97.

Essentially, the game boils down hockey's strongest points, the multiplayer capabilities (being the first N64 game to make use of the four-player ports), and the Arcade Mode. A fine first effort for a hockey title from Midway and Atari Games.

WG3DH would, and is, a good, solid game for the casual gamer. But for us hockey nuts (I'm a Canadian) the simulation mode was certainly not realistic enough. I mean, scoring on every third shot is not what happens in real hockey and having 20-19 scores in the end just doesn't cut it. And the fact that you weren't able to be the goaltender in this game was also a real downer. But the real turn-off for me was the fact that you weren't able to make trades, create players, or keep detailed statistics of your player(s).

All Game Guide
The announcer in this game is simply irritating. Everyone can do without his limited repertoire of comments; it sounds like Midway was trying to create a John Madden-style commentator for hockey. And the crowd just cheers whatever's going on, whether the home team is winning or not. A crowd should cheer and boo according to what happened to the home team, and every rink should have unique organ music. You won't find any of this here, but you will find a reasonably entertaining hockey game with an emphasis on action.

It's not a terrible game, but with a name like Wayne Gretzky you expect a lot more.
