I was expecting Newman Haas Racing to be a watered down version of Formula 1 but in fact it is way up their with both of Psygnosis' excellent Grand Prix games. I wouldn't say that it was better than either of them because basically the same game engine has been used. Surprisingly even the ovals were a pleasure to race and not the usual boring trip around the block. If I was to pick a fault with the game it would be the lack of Link-up mode and perhaps a few more options to adjust the car settings would be welcome. Overall, another splendid title from the lads from Liverpool.

For gamers who like the sim in simulators, and just have to play the latest Indycar game, take a good hard look at Newman Haas Racing.

Newman Haas does have some good features which are left unspoiled, like a pit crew that you can watch remove and replace your tyres, and a menu which allows you to radio ahead your demands to them, from fuel load to tyre pressure. Accept that you’re not going to have perfect steering control over the car and you will even start to have some fun. After all, the tracks are fast, you can tune everything on the cars, and the split screen mode is OK. But sooner or later, you’re going to want to try a championship and when you lose because of the dodgy controls again, you’ll break something.

Indy Car devotees have probably logged off and bought Newman/Haas already, but for the rest of us, a qualifying lap on the rental track is definitely recommended.

Another case of 'close but no Lewinsky' for Psygnosis this month, then. And another game that feels more like a PlayStation release than a PC game. Can't be a coincidence, that.

Once you get past the graphical glitches, Newman/Haas is a pretty fun game to play. The driving experience is realistic and exciting. The commentators are lively and engaging. The peelouts, crashes, and "rubbing" make for a complete driving experience. However, when all is said and done, Newman/Haas is just not as good as F1. Play it for a different flavor and then go back to Formula 1.

Even with all the flaws, Newman/Haas can be fun, if you're a beginner and haven't tried any other racing games. But for seasoned gamers looking for an exciting combination of realism and action, this is definitely not the place to begin the quest.

Sadly though, it’s a downhill ride from there. Driving is an exercise in frustration. Feel the wrath of the omnipresent emergency brake as you accelerate from a stop or decelerate to one. Pendulum suddenly into a wall or competitor as you zig-zag down a straightaway. Experience the horror of the non-turning NEWMAN/HAAS physics model should you attempt to any corner at any sort of decent speed. I kid you not—It’s that quirky.
