Not what the fans wanted, but this is a Star Fox departure that works. Dogfighting and strategy in perfect unison, this'll keep you going until Fox makes his proper return.

For the newest entry in a series that has fallen on hard times lately, Star Fox Command is not an attempt to recapture the old magic, but rather a bold new game that mixes some nostalgia and core concepts with many new features. Maybe that's why it works so well, even though we old Star Fox fans may still pine for a fresh set of on-rails shooter levels.

I'm definitely glad to see Starfox return to the skies and get rid of the terrible on-foot missions. If a DS sequel featured some classic on-rails areas and perhaps omitted the odd "strategy" element, I think this series has the potential to return to its former glory. Starfox Command is a step in the right direction for the series.

As far as the game goes, the battles are a lot of fun, although I daresay they border on the ridiculously easy. The biggest issue I had with Starfox Command was that it was over all too quickly. I was sitting on the train yesterday, killing many a space fish and galactic giant worm, and next thing I know, its over. I had beaten the game. In like, maybe, 10 hours of play. Only twenty minutes into my commute home. And I'm sorry, I don't care if a game is hand-held, it needs to last at least until my stop.

I really enjoyed Star Fox Command as it is a solid polished space shooter with a fun quirky story, simple yet effective control system and solid multiplayer experience. The bosses could have been staggered better in terms of difficulty and the missions could have been more varied. Nevertheless, it is an amazing game worthy of your time and a place in your collection.

It looks like someone at Nintendo finally took my advice and broke both of Fox McCloud’s legs. I know this is a horrible thing to say, but disaster strikes whenever this fuzzy little critter frolics in the brush. His place is in the cockpit. That’s where he’s at his best. When he isn’t soaring in his Arwing, the only thing that is airborne is a Nintendo machine thrown out of a window by a disconsolate fan boy. Nintendo tried to expand the Star Fox brand with the on foot focus in Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox Assault, but it just didn’t take. Rather than making the same cataclysmic mistake of grounding the excitement, Nintendo and developer Q-Games are giving Fox another chance to earn his wings. Star Fox Command isn’t the sequel to Star Fox 64 that everyone has been looking to the skies for, but it does deliver the same nerve-rattling intensity that the series has been lacking in recent years.

The sole fact that Star Fox Command is entirely about dogfighting is enough to make fans of the series rejoice. The action is intense; single-player is packed with replay; and the controls will quickly grow on you like a tick on a dog. Though multiplayer is as predictable as a bologna sandwich and it's a little too save-scarce for being a portable title, Star Fox Command nonetheless asserts itself as a DS top gun.

The motley crew of human-like animal pilots known as Star Fox aren't among the most famous of game characters, but the series of space-themed shooters is largely considered to be classic. After an adventure spin-off and a not-so-successful update developed by another company, Star Fox Command isn't exactly the rebirth of the classic some fans might have hoped for. Instead it's a substantially different experience that works a strategy angle and relies almost entirely on touch-screen control. It turns out to be a pleasant surprise.

The original Star Fox game gained its notoriety because it was the game that arguably pioneered the 3D era on consoles back in 1992. Even with that as the game's one main "hook," Nintendo and its development team at Argonaut managed to pull off an incredibly memorable and amazingly fun experience, and Star Fox was strong enough to continue on as a franchise and join the likes of Metroid, Zelda, and Mario in the stable of sequel-favored Nintendo properties.

Overall, Starfox Command is a pretty successful lab rat. The gameplay holds up pretty well but it has the same old Starfox problem; the thrills are over far too quickly and far too easily. The visuals run smoothly and the presentation isn’t bad. The online multiplayer is quite a service for Starfox fans who want to take on the world with their skills. Starfox makes a decent handheld landing, albeit with a few holes in its wings–it’s not perfect, but it’ll entertain fans of the series regardless.

You get a decent space-shooter with an original and good control system through the touchscreen, added with a strategic sauce, beautiful 3D graphics and a presentation that's done as it should. A pleasant go-between for those that love simple but fun games.

As long as you're open minded enough and not expecting something traditional from Star Fox Command, there's plenty of fun to be had. It's not perfect, the controls are strangely inhibitive, but the gameplay is otherwise solid. With a unique mix of dog fighting action and a little strategy, plenty of alternate paths and competent online action, Star Fox's latest adventure comes recommended.

Star Fox Command is an interesting twist on the Star Fox franchise adding strategy and touch screen controls. Like the previous Star Fox game, Assault, Nintendo took a chance by giving the ok to switch up the traditional gameplay. Star Fox Command might not be for all gamers, but the ones who take to Fox's new gig they will find a game full which is rewarding and unique. Overall, I have to recommend Star Fox Command as rent before you by mainly because it might not be what you expected.

Starfox Command has a lot to recommend it, but it is a strong departure from the classic SNES and N64 games. For some, this may not be a bad thing, but for those wanting a nostalgia trip, you may be better to stay away. I can't help but feel that without the personality of the Starfox characters that this would be an extremely generic game that would not appeal at all, but the addition of wi-fi multiplayer and the great cast pull the game back from the brink of mediocrity and make it a good addition to the library of any DS owner.

Gamestyle
Though lacking in certain areas, Star Fox Command's qualities all add up. It's odd that its hindrance would be its aerial combat and its saving grace would be its strategy, something that the series has not been known for, but this is still the best Starfox game in while.

Lately, it seems that there's always something a little off with Star Fox. Rare's attempt at a Zelda-esque adventure game, Star Fox Adventures, fell a little flat, and contrary to what were reasonable assumptions at the time, Namco never should've been given the lead on the mediocre Star Fox: Assault. The last truly great Star Fox experience was Star Fox 64, a straight-up space shooter with only a few well-executed ground missions. Yet this recent streak of quirks continues in Star Fox Command, a game that mixes the franchise's traditional arcade combat with, of all things, turn-based strategy. What's even stranger? It somehow kinda works.

Armchair Empire, The
For the longest time, it’s seemed like someone deep within Nintendo has held a grudge against Star Fox. The questionable Star Fox Adventures and even more mediocre Star Fox Assault seemed to point to a company that had no idea what to do with their spaceship-piloting, furry-shooting extravaganza. Their latest entry, Star Fox Command, is another misguided attempt to keep the series from falling into obscurity, but at least it has its heart in the right place.

The Video Game Critic
Star Fox Command is addicting at first, but its overbearing strategy becomes tiresome after a while. The advanced missions can be pretty drawn out, and sometimes a single hidden enemy will slip by and ruin an otherwise flawless mission, forcing you to start over. There's also a lot of worthless text dialogue between stages, although thankfully you can skip this. Star Fox Command certainly takes advantage of the DS's capabilities, but unless you have a mind for strategy, you may want to pass this one up.

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
In a perfect world, Command would be a straightforward shooter picking off where Star Fox 64 ended, not after the rut Star Fox has been pushed into. As if we needed another reason to prove it, we do not live in that world. Instead, we're forced to endure an attempt to change what didn't need changing with little regard for why fans love this series. This is a questionable buy even if you have access to a Wi-Fi connection.
