Set in the grim future of the Warhammer 40,000 table-top game, Fire Warrior is a first person shooter where the player spends a day in the life of a Tau (an alien race) commando. Charged with rescuing an immortal who has been captured by the human Imperium, he will soon realize there are darker forces at work.

The game offers a twenty-one mission single player story as well as multiplayer death matches, team death matches and capture the flag for up to eight people online. A regular First-Person shooter.

The Good
(Un)fortunately, the major positive point of this game is the setting - the fascinating, Dune-esque universe of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. THQ was able to capture the grim, heavy and gothic ambience of a galaxy under the grip of constant war as several factions - in this game we meet the technological Tau, the terrible forces of Chaos and the totalitarian Imperium of Man (which brings us, of course, the famed Space Marines).

Graphics also deserve a worthy mention: the excessively dark spirit of the game and its setting is extremely well represented.

The Bad
Aside from the graphics and the way the developers implemented the Warhammer 40k ambience, I did not like this game at all. The levels are too much straight-forward, the objectives do not vary much: get blue key, get magenta key, blow up door, etc.

Music is non-existent (unless you count with the menu), sound effects could be much better (specially voice acting) and the AI is simply awful, with enemies throwing themselves against you and not leaving certain pre-scripted areas. It is incredibly easy to use these AI flaws to our own advantage in the game - take the Imperial captain, for instance, which attacks you with a chainsaw. If you leave the room he is, it is most certain he will stay on the division between the two areas, leaving you alone to shoot him at distance. Disgraceful.

The Bottom Line
A great dive at the universe of Warhammer 40,000, specially recommended at fans of the genre. A median FPS, all else considered.
