Welltris is certainly the finest arcade game we've played so far this year. It will take one heckuva program to top this one as far as its total play-to-dollar ratio, and we doubt whether many gamers will ever grow tired of playing Welltris. The challenge, sights, sounds, and constantly changing facets make this game an experience not to be missed.

Reviewed in the September issue on the Amiga, this "follow up" to the classic Tetris has made it across to the PC in all its glory. Gameplay is identical and all the usual PC options (CGA/EGA and additional soundboards) are catered for. As with the Amiga version, Welltris does not exactly stretch the machine to its limits, but similarly to Tetris, its addictivity relies on its simplicity. An essential puzzler for PC owners.
The Russian game that sent the West mad is back with a vengeance. For the uninitiated, Tetris involved manipulating falling coloured shapes so that when they landed they might form a line with other shapes. The concept of the sequel is similar, but it has been expanded.
A compulsive successor to Tetris
Its the layout of the keys that really lets Weltris' playability down. If you can cope with the keys then you may be able to have some fun with the game, because it's a pretty spiffy puzzle game and can be hellishly addictive

Welltris is a worthy successor to Tetris in that it plays well. The only trouble is that it doesn't quite have a quality feel about it. Perhaps it's simply those ill-making graphics. Anyway, it's different enough to make it worth buying if you forked out for the original. But if you didn't like Tetris, forget this 'un. It requires the same kind of reactions, logic and concentration.

Puzzle games like this one are an acquired taste and many arcade fans will find the pace of Welltris too slow for their liking. Fans of the original Tetris however, will relish the challenge Alexey Pajitov has set for them. Neither the graphics nor the sound can be classed as stunning, but the addictive gameplay will have you coming back for more, time and time again.

was brilliantly simple. Welltris has certainly added to the gameplay and depth of the original, but the result is a game that's no longer simple at all. The strategies are more complex and it requires greater lateral thinking - but it's not the same game any more. Welltris has more features, but in gaining these features it's lost the simplistic appeal of the original. And it's really not very easy to tell if you're doing well or not! However, the responsiveness and playability of the game are much better. Welltris is definitely one for the eggheads, even those new to the ST - you'll take a long, long time to master its subtleties.

Block Out macht langfristig allerdings mehr Spaß.
So is Welltris going to take the world by storm in the same way its predecessor did? I think not. While it's simple enough to get the hang of, Welltris just doesn't grab you, perhaps because it requires a little too much thought to play at speed. Whatever the reason, Welltris simply fails to follow in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessor - perhaps Tetris is too hard an act to follow after all.

Even allowing for the fact that Welltris is not my kind of game, this is a pretty poor effort which will do nothing to contribute to glasnost.
