Also auf ins Monster Land!

This game is fun to look at and to listen to, mainly due to how fun the game is overall. Think of Lupin in the Castle of Cagliostro. Think of the magic in the straightforwardness of a simple, charming adventure of a hero on a quest; the colour, the emotion. When it's done just right, as Sega has done it here, it's like a sunny day.

SEGA Master SystemAll Game Guide
Wonder Boy in Monster Land is a great game. Purchasing items adds a lot of depth to the game as they have an impact on your character. There is plenty of hidden money to be found and there are also hidden doors. Kill monsters, purchase items, make precision jumps, and find hidden items -- this game has almost everything.

Atari STThe Games Machine (UK)
On the ST, Super Wonder Boy is not only playable, but the graphics are the nearest to the arcade machine you're going to get. Sound is also good, with a bouncy tune playing throughout the game. On the ST, Super Wonder Boy is certainly deserving the Star Player accolade.

ZX SpectrumThe Games Machine (UK)
Tom-Tom is just the job on the Spectrum. Although he's simply monochrome, the backgrounds are extremely detailed and highly involving. Probably the best conversion you could expect on the Spectrum, and certainly worth a tenner of any Speccy's owner's cash.

On the whole, I would say this is easily the best Master System game I have played. Bear in mind it is also probably the sixth or seventh I've played, and I haven't played Phantasy Star on it yet, so please keep that qualifier in mind. Nevertheless, I recommend this game for Master System owners and fans of 2D platformers in general. You'll easily get a few hours of light-hearted enjoyment out of it, and what more do you really need?

Atari STPower Play

SEGA Master SystemIGN
And that's who this latest Virtual Console Wonder Boy release should most appeal to -- established fans from the 8-bit Master System days, nostalgic for their experience with the original cartridge release. Taken in the context of the Master System library, Wonder Boy in Monster Land is still a classic and well worth an investment of just five bucks to own again -- Levi named it one of the 7 Master System Games You Need on our Retro channel just last year.

SEGA Master SystemThe Video Game Critic
My only complaint is that some of the platform jumping is more difficult than it needs to be. There's no continue or password feature, but you do get a score at the end of each game. Simple and innocent, Wonder Boy in Monster Island is pleasant and entertaining to play. Note: The "art" on the box of this game has got to be the worst I've ever seen. The chubby lead character looks like somebody's mom for Pete's sake!

AmigaAmiga Joker

Commodore 64The Games Machine (UK)
On the Commodore the game is colourful. However, the characters and backgrounds are of the Adventures in Legoland variety and severely spoil the presentation of a game which is, in fact, very playable.

Commodore 64Zzap!
The C64 game is marginally more impressive graphically and definitely more playable than it's dull 16-bit counterpart. However the platform action of both versions is more than a bit jaded and, with revival medicine and continue-plays, hardly challenging. In fact you'll need all that coffee to keep you awake!

Wonderboy has reached puberty! But the adolescent Tom-Tom has more pressing matters to deal with than chasing girls and squeezing spots. A ferocious dragon must be slain before peace can return to Wonderland.
