Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums will set no records nor will it spark a wave of gameplay revolutions. However, as a game that balances so many forms of gameplay successfully, Carmen certainly earns my respect. For younger gamers (especially those with only an Xbox) this is a must buy. For the rest of us, if you have some free time coming up and are looking for an enjoyable distraction that isn’t too intense, it would be hard to go wrong with Carmen Sandiego: The Secret of the Stolen Drums.

Carmen Sandiego ist ein Titel der sich ungeniert bei den großen Genrevertretern bedient hat aber an dem nichts besser gemacht wurde. Zwar ist es kein schlechtes Spiel, es bietet uns aber auch überhaupt nichts was wir nicht bereits aus anderen Games her kennen. Da auch die technische Umsetzung eher Mittelmass ist, die Level wirken oft leer und der Sound wiederholt sich permanent, die Kameraführung ist auch nicht gelungen und die Rätsel verdienen ihren Namen eigentlich nicht, ist die Gruppe derer denen man dieses Spiel empfehlen kann nur noch sehr klein. Denn Anhänger von Carmen Sandiego werden sicher ihren Spaß mit dem Game haben, gibt es doch viele bekannte Gesichter und Begebenheiten zu erleben. Wer allerdings auf der Suche nach einem richtigen Schleichspiel ist greift lieber zu Splinter Cell oder Rogue Ops, und wer doch lieber ein gediegenes Action-Adventure spielt sollte sich die aktuellen Titel Sphinx, Pitfall, Whiplash oder Beyond Good & Evil einmal näher anschauen.

Is Carmen Sandiego: the Secret of the Stolen Drums worth your hard earned cash? Well, if you’re a major fan of the television show and PC games, then no. If you’re a gamer looking for sweet platforming action, then no. Thing is, there are other platform action-adventure games out there. If you’re out for an engaging adventure chock full of personality, action and light stealth elements, then head toward Beyond Good & Evil. If you want a history lesson, then crack open a book. The Secret of the Stolen Drums warrants a rental if you’ve played and finished Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Super Mario Sunshine, Beyond Good & Evil, Jak II and other such platformers. It may also entertain the kiddies for awhile. Otherwise, simply rent it if you’re curious.

It's plainly obvious that The Secret of the Stolen Drums is aimed squarely at younger gamers, but even so, this game is pretty unimpressive. The controls are likely to frustrate younger players even more than experienced platformer fans, and the lack of even a modicum of challenge and the relative brevity of the game make this a pretty lousy package overall. To sum it all up, don't go into The Secret of the Stolen Drums thinking you're going to get an educational game or an enjoyable platformer, as you'll find neither here.

Bref, Carmen Sandiego reste d'un classissisme affligeant, mais ce n'est pas vraiment ce point qu'on déplore le plus. Tout se passe en fait au niveau de la réalisation. Préhistorique du titre. Sans blague, le jeu nous fait faire un bon en arrière assez énorme et on se revoit en train de jouer sur notre première Playstation. C'était le bon temps ça, les personnages étaient modélisés avec trois bouts de ficelle, les décors mettaient bien en avant les arêtes saillantes de chaque polygone et on pestait sauvagement contre les caméras souvent mal réglées. Ici c'est pareil. Graphiquement, c'est pas la joie, pour le son non plus d'ailleurs et la gestion de la caméra est juste catastrophique. Celle-ci se bloque souvent contre les murs et se permet aussi de rester dans une pièce alors que Cole se trouve déjà dans la suivante (obligation de revenir en arrière à l'aveuglette pour récupérer la focale). En gros, un jeu de plates-formes ultra basique et pas flamboyant non plus au niveau technique.
